Win A New Hunting Rifle Or Knife!
Help collect biological samples from deer and elk and your name will be
entered in a drawing for a rifle or knife.
1st prize: hunting rifle of your choice up to $450.
2nd prize: hunting knife of your choice up to $50.
Drawing to be held at 5:30 p.m. on April 8, 2004 at the Fish & Wildlife
Committee meeting at the Natural Resources office. Prizes sponsored by
the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Fish & Wildlife Committee.
Why: The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Natural Resources Di
vision, in cooperation with Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife and
USDA Veterinary Services, is collecting biological samples from deer and
elk to learn more about diseases that may be affecting our deer and elk
herds.
Deer Hair Loss Syndrome is already present in the Grand Ronde
area. Samples may help determine the cause and method of spread of
deer hair loss syndrome.
Chronic Wasting Disease has not been detected in Oregon. We want
to catch this disease early if it shows up in Oregon as it can have devastat
ing affects on deer and elk populations.
Adenovirus Hemorrhagic Disease is not known in the Grand Ronde
area but has been detected in southwest and central Oregon. Samples
will help determine where adenovirus is found in Oregon.
How to Participate:
H Allow the Tribes' biologists to collect samples of brain stems from elk and
samples of lice, blood and brainstems from deer.
B All samples must be collected within 48 hours of death, 24 hours pre
ferred. D Bring hunter harvested animals to the Tribes' Natural Resources office
at 47010 S.W. Hebo Road, Monday through Friday from 8 to 4:30 p.m.
B If you are unable to bring an animal in we may be able to come to you
to collect samples. Please contact the Tribe's biologists for more informa
tion. B If the entire animal can't be brought in, then provide the hide for lice
samples, the heart for a blood sample and the head for a brain sample. All
parts can be returned after samples are taken.
B Hunters will need to provide the general location of where the animal
was killed (to be used in the event that a disease is found).
B Your name will be entered in the drawing for each useable sample we
are able to collect, up to one for each elk, and up to three entries for each
deer.
B Fresh road kills can be reported to the Tribes' biologists so we can pick it
up for sampling. Your name would then be entered for any useable
samples we collect from the road kill.
B Tribal members and the general public are eligible to participate.
B Animals must be harvested legally.
The Fish & Wildlife Committee and Natural Resources Division thank
you for your help in gathering information to help us maintain our deer
and elk populations. Happy Hunting.
