Dear Smoke Signals,
Thank you for the beautiful flowers, all the help and kindness from
everyone! It has been an extremely difficult time for all of us. My hus
band Cliff struggled for two months in a Spokane, Washington hospital
before going to be with the Lord on June 6, 2003. God Bless this Tribe for
all the love and support. Cliff was working at the time on the "Lower
Granite Dam" in Colfax, Washington.
God Bless,
June Burnham, John Flansberg, Lisa,
John, Jr., Calvin Burnham and Joshua
Dear Tribal members,
I, Veronica Eileen Gaston will be undergoing major back surgery on
December 9, 2003 at the Salem Hospital in Salem, Oregon. This opera
tion is going to require blood transfusions throughout the operation. I am
asking Tribal members who are able to donate blood, please do so. When
you donate, please let them know who it is for. I have a Type O Positive,
which is the universal blood type. You can start donating blood between
November 30 December 8.
Thank you,
Veronica Gaston

Dear Smoke Signals,
As a Dental Hygienist working for the Tribe the last ten years, I read
with interest the special edition "Water is Gold" feature within the Octo
ber 1 issue of Smoke Signals. With all the attention the water issue is
getting I feel now is the right time to begin thinking about water fluorida
tion for the Grand Ronde Community.
Water fluoridation is the single most cost-effective public health mea
sure to prevent tooth decay and improve oral health. The Centers for
Disease Control state that extensive research conducted over the past 50
years has shown time and time again that fluoridation of public water
supplies is a safe and effective way to reduce cavities for all community
residents.
Sheridan, McMinnville, Dallas and Salem communities already receive
the benefits of water fluoridation; let us join our neighbors in this en
deavor. The Grand Ronde Tribe has a history of providing for the future
well-being of its members. Let us continue to take care of our community
by providing the benefits of water fluoridation.
I invite you to join me in supporting this prevention measure.
Sincerely,
Linda Mann

Spooky Tribal member Jesse Brann showed her Halloween spirit by deco
rating her Grand Meadows home with all sorts of spooky ghosts, goblins, witches
and cobwebs to celebrate the holiday. Brann, a Legal Secretary for the Tribe,
decorates her home every holiday season, and says that Halloween and Christ
mas are her favorite holidays.
