"Ode to Isabelle Fry"
A memorial service for Isabelle Marie Fry, a
ChinookTillamookRogue River Tribal Elder 88,
of Myrtle Point was held on July 26, 2003 at the
Powers Church of God, the Rev. Kenneth Stevens
officiated the ceremony. Isabelle was born July
5, 1915, in Eugene, Oregon to Benjamin and
Annie (Tieskotter) Jeffers. She passed away on
July 12, 2003. Family and friends gathered at
the Powers cemetery for drumming and honor
songs following the service.
Isabelle was raised for a portion of her life in the Christie Orphan
home for Girls in Lake Oswego after the death of her mother. As an
adult, she fell in love and married Wilson "Spud" Rogers from Eu
gene, Oregon. In 1941 Isabelle and Wilson moved to Powers, Or
egon and raised their four children; Louise, Bonnie, Larry and Eu
gene. She lived the majority of her life in Powers. Larry, her son,
died in an accident at the age of 15, and Wilson died of a health
related illness January 1, 1969.
She spent most of her adult life fishing the Rogue River for salmon.
One of her favorite sayings was "Fish On." She met and married her
second husband Woodrow Fry in Agnes who was her dear friend and
fishing partner for many years. She loved attending pow-wow's, lis
tening to the drums and the sweet smell of bear grass and she fol
lowed and honored her ancestral ways. She enjoyed rock hunting,
gathering natural herbs and mushroom picking. At the age of 76,
she was still fishing and camping the Rogue River in Agnes, Oregon.
She was also the mascot for the Powers Cruiser's football team, and
she was recognized by the Coos County Blood Bank for donating
more than 5 gallons of blood, (whereas she never had a driver's li
cense in her entire life, but managed to hitch a ride with someone
going that way to donate blood). She wrote two famous poems; "The
Heidelberg Tree"; and "Ode to Rogue River," which the family cher
ishes dearly.
It was a great honor when Grand Ronde asked Isabelle to be Grand
Marshall for the annual pow-wow in August 2003. She wouldn't
have missed it for the world.
Isabelle lived her life to its fullest potential and her strong spirit
lives in each and everyone who met her, knew her, and loved her.
"Long live "Fish On!"
She is survived by her daughters Louise Hannaford of Cottage
Grove; Bonnie Findley of Myrtle Point; son, Eugene "Gene" Rogers of
Eugene, her grandchildren and great grandchildren and great great
grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Wilson Rogers;
son Larry Rogers; brother Fred Jeffers and Edward Jeffers; and her
second husband, Woodrow Fry.
