Smoke Signals
Dear Smoke Signals,
I very much appreciate the free subscription to your paper, which I
began receiving through the courtesy of Vernon Kennedy. I have known
Vernon since he was a "wee little guy" when I lived in Burns, Oregon.
Because my husband did a lot of work on the houses of the Paiute Res
ervation there, we became acquainted with a majority of the people living
on this small Reservation.
I am not Indian, but we learned to love many of these people and visited
them often. We ate many meals with the Tribe. We also kept two little
Paiute girls for much of ten years, one of whom we were thrilled to watch
graduate from Chemawa Indian School as Salutatorian of her class.
Since being widowed and also partly disabled, I moved to Medford to be
closer to my only child who lives in California. But I do miss my friends in
Burns. I felt truly honored when the Paiute people made me a going
away dinner before I left.
Cordially,
Bessie Baugh
Dear Editor,
I was saddened to hear John Mercier tell us what has happened with
the recycling bins. If anyone truly cares about Mother Earth, it is our
Indian brothers and sisters. Your people have always cared about the
land.
Some years ago, I had the privilege of living with your Tribal member,
sister Kateri Petite. She taught me so much about Grandfather God and
Mother Earth. She taught the children that all of creation is sacred. We
were to use, but not waste the goods of the earth. She was so proud of her
Indian heritage and took great pride in learning Chinook Wawa. She is'
someone you can be so proud of for her Tribal love. Even when bound to
a wheelchair, she went to your pow-wows.
I hope whoever put the old furniture in the recycle bin reads this.
Grateful for Smoke Signals,
Sister Ina Marie Nosack
Dear Smoke Signals,
The Smoke Signals newspaper has given me a lot to think on, believe in
and encourage our Native peoples. I'm a relocated Cherokee from North
Carolina. All that your newspaper reflects is a positive step in my own
personal life. To be in touch with Native events, gives me pride to see how
we have progressed over the years. Thanks for all your nation and its
positiveness gives it each and every one of Grandfather's people.
In the Spirit,
John Walking Eagle Zepeda

This is a part of a fire ceremony that fed and honored our ancestors
that passed on. We want to share this. We are doing this so we can
honor and respect our people of the past, present and future.
This event is put on by Tribal members. All people are welcome.
