Dear Smoke Signals,
I would like to thank Merle Holmes for traveling all the way to Warm
Springs to be a part of the Medicine Society. I would also like to thank the
Grand Ronde Tribe for honoring Chief Nelson Wallulatum and for the gift
of the Pendleton blanket. Chief Nelson is one of the oldest Wasco Chiefs
on this Reservation; In May he will be 45 years as Wasco Chief. On be
half of the Medicine Singers, I would like to thank Merle Holmes for tak
ing part and joining us in the healing process.

Spiritual Leader
Dear Smoke Signals,
Our thanks to all the people who came to our Annual Spring Spiritual
Gathering. We also would like to thank all the people who helped with
the feast. Thanks also to the Makah for their support and donations.
We're grateful to our drummers, flute players and singers. We pray
that next year it will be bigger and better. Thank you everyone for shar
ing this day with us.
Culture Committee
Dear Smoke Signals,
We would like to thank you very much for your free subscription to your
paper. We transferred down here to Chemawa Indian School in 1983,
when Mt. Edgecumber High School in Sitka, Alaska closed its doors. We
worked at Chemawa Indian School. My son, Eugene was an attendance
officer and I worked in the dormitories as a night attendant. I retired
from Chemawa Indian School in March of 1999. Eugene kept working. A
former student, Frank Hostler II, E-4 Specialist pictured in your April 1,
2003 issue, graduated in 1985 from Chemawa Indian School. Eugene
and I are very proud of this young man. We always encouraged these
young boys and girls at Chemawa Indian School to fight for their educa
tion. Frank was a very considerate young man and always volunteered
to help us.
Sincerely yours,
Ms. Hiebert & Eugene Hiebert
