The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde in partnership with the Mission
Mill Museum are hosting an exhibit of baskets from both collections
entitled, "A Record of Change: Western Oregon Basketry." Basketry has
forever been an integral component of Native life. A baby was placed in
a woven cradle basket. Huckleberries, tarweed seed, camas, wapato, and
fish were gathered, dried, processed and stored in baskets. And although
recent history has interrupted and influenced the basket weaving continuum, it has
failed to suppress it. The settler influence was exerted both locally as well as through
federal mandates, which severely impacted the Grand Ronde Reservation community.
But the community persevered. Our exhibit speaks to this concept of community through
the medium of basket weaving, and showcases a wide range of basketry from
traditional clam baskets and rush gathering baskets, to hazel carrying baskets and
hampers, to a variety of baskets by contemporary Grand Ronde weavers, all of which
illustrate the influences of dynamic culture, forced relocation, non-Indian interference,
and the perseverance of the Grand Ronde weaving tradition.
This basket exhibit is located in the gallery at the Mission Mill Museum in Salem, "A
Record of Change: Western Oregon Basketry" runs through April 1 7' Admission is
FREE to Grand Ronde Tribal Members. Grand Ronde weavers Connie Graves and

Basket Basics on Saturday, April 5 from 1 0 a.m.

April 12 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ($65 for
Members; $70 for Non-Members) and "Songs of the Basket:
Intermediate" on Saturday, April 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Timber Committee is currently seeking applications to fill two
vacant positions on the committee. This committee acts in an advi
sory capacity to Tribal Council and the Natural Resources Division,
where timber and other natural resource issues are considered. The
applicant must possess a general understanding of Western Oregon
logging practices and Silvicultural practices. The committee meets
on the second Thursday of each month at 5:00 p.m. In order to apply

Governmental Corporations Ordinance Amendments
The Tribal Council, in consultation with the Tribal Attorney's Of
fice, has made the following emergency amendments to the Govern
mental Corporations Ordinance. The amendments were adopted on
a temporary basis at the February 5, 2003, Tribal Council meeting.
The purpose of the amendments is to prohibit Tribal assets from
being used to indemnify any individual who has been specifically
excluded from coverage under insurance policies which policies would
otherwise cover the cost and expense of defending that individual.
The amendments modify the Governmental Corporations Ordinance
as follows:
D The words "Notwithstanding the above" are inserted at the begin
ning of the first sentence of Section (s)(2)(D).
B The following language is inserted as a new Subsection (s)(2)(D)(3)
"if the director has been expressly excluded from coverage under
any corporate or Tribal insurance policy which would otherwise cover
costs and expenses incurred defending the claim or proceeding."
As amended Section (s)(2)(D)(l-3) reads as follows:
"(D) Notwithstanding the above, a corporation may not indem
nify a director under this section:
1. in connection with a proceeding by or in the right of the
corporation in which the director was adjudged liable to the
corporation; or
2. in connection with any other proceeding charging improper
personal benefit to him or her, whether or not involving action
in his or her official capacity, in which he or she was adjudged
liable on the basis that personal benefit was improperly received
by him or her;
3. if the director has been expressly excluded from coverage
under any corporate or Tribal insurance policy which would
otherwise cover costs and expenses incurred defending the claim
or proceeding."

"(4) Notwithstanding the above, the Tribe may not indemnify a
Council member under this Section:
(A) in connection with a proceeding by or in the right of the Tribe in
which the council member was adjudged liable to the Tribe;
(B) in connection with any other proceeding charging improper be
havior under the Tribal Ethical Standards Ordinance in which he was
determined to have violated that Ordinance; or
(C) If the council member has been expressly excluded from
coverage under any Tribal insurance policy which would other
wise cover costs and expenses incurred defending the claim or
proceeding."
