Explosive Volatile Portland Power Forward Rasheed Wallace (above shooting
over Antoine Davis) led the Blazers to victory over the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday,

will in the second half to lead Portland to the win.
Clutch Exciting Blazer Small Forward Bonzi Wells (top left), back from a one game
suspension the night before, scored key baskets in the game with the Raptors. More
importantly, Wells played solid defense on Toronto superstar Vince Carter.
Streak Shooter One of the newest Portland Trail Blazers this season is the
versatile and athletic Derek Anderson (left). Anderson, who finished the game with 18

TRACK
"We had some pretty good
athletes (last year)," said
Willamina Track Coach Chris
Rankin, "but we weren't very
deep. Both (boys and girls) fin
ished fourth in district." This
year, some of the senior leader
ship is gone, among them,
Kelsey Richardson in pole vault
and high jump and Era Davis
in all the throwing events.
So the track team is again
this year "a very young team.
Last year, we were a kind of
sophomore freshman team
with just a few seniors and jun
iors. This year, a few seniors
Willamina Spring High School Sports Get Un
Young Tribal members will play a key role in all three-spring sports
but a lot of underclassmen." Last
year's freshman, though, "should
be much improved," he said.
"We're hoping to do better at dis
tricts since we have a little more
depth," said Rankin. "State (re
sults) depends on our health and
the breaks. We could finish pretty
high with both teams."
Tribal member and jumper Alex
Bishop is one of the exciting ath
letes to watch, according to Rankin.
He also included in that select
group, "all of the Zimbricks" (Tribal
members Matt, Caitlin and
Meghan), John Talmadge and
Shalise Holsclaw. Talmadge went
to state last year in the discus
throw, and Holsclaw ran the 800
meter race at state as a freshman
last year.
SOFTBALL
The girls' Softball team made it
to the state semi-finals last year.
"It was a great season overall, and
we thought we could have been in
the state championship game," said
coach Ron Caligure.
The Lady Bulldogs had beaten
the ultimate State Champion Day
ton Pirates twice during the sea
son, but at state, Gold Beach de
feated Willamina, and then Day
ton defeated Gold Beach. Go fig
ure. Back this year are seniors Jessy
Rosenberry at short stop, catcher
Nikki Commerford and outfielder
Leah Bazzy. Junior Jessica
Cruickshank is back in the outfield.
Sophomore Caitlyn Chewning
played second last year and will be
pitching this year. Junior Hilary
Torres is back at third base. Torres
could have the toughest spot to fill
this year as she replaces Tribal
member Cristina Lara, a team
leader, at third base.
"It's going to be a tough season,"
said Caligure, "but if we get a few
breaks here and there and the girls
gel together, we could make the dis
trict playoffs."
First baseman Shalise Holsclaw
is the first girl from the district to
also compete in Track during the
same season, said Caligure.
"Sheridan does it. Dayton does it.
It can be done and I wish a few
more girls on the track team would
come out and play softball."
