Teachers, counselors, principals and community mem bers are invited to nominate high-school students from Western Wash ington who are visionaries and champions of diversity. Special Scholarship Opportunities Deceased or Disabled Public Safety Officer Grants Applicants for awards must be the natural, adopted, or stepchild of any public safety officer in Oregon who was killed or disabled in the line of duty. The income for the disabled officer must be less than that earned by public safety officers performing duties comparable to those performed at the highest rank or grade attained by the disabled parent. Applicants must be Oregon residents and enrolled as full-time undergraduate stu dents at 2- or 4-year, public or private colleges in Oregon. Eligible public safety officers include: B Firefighters B State Fire Marshal, chief duty fire marshal, and deputy state fire marshals B Police chiefs and police officers B Sheriffs and deputy sheriffs B County adult parole and probation officers B Correction officers fl Investigators of the criminal justice division of the Depart ment of Justice Awards are made for a maximum of twelve quarters or until a bacca laureate degree is earned, whichever comes first. The amount at public 2 or 4-year colleges may not exceed the cost of tuition and fees. The amount at private colleges may not exceed the cost of tuition and fees at the Uni versity of Oregon. Technical & Vocational Awards Many OSAC scholarships can be used at technical and vocational schools, including the Angelian and Pete Costanzo Vocational, Kaiser Permanente Dental Assistant, and the Brian Moody Memorial Aviation scholarship programs. Barber & Hairdresser Grant OSAC administers the Barber & Hairdresser (B&H) Grant Program which offers one-time awards of $600 to about 90 students each year. Only Oregon residents with significant need for financial help receive B&H grants. Recipients are randomly selected from all eligible B&H stu dents who have filed their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) forms. In addition, you must be attending fulltime a licensed Oregon school of barbering, hair design, cosmetology, or manicure. Your program must be at least nine months long (or 900 clock hours). To apply, talk to the financial aid officer at the school you plan to attend and then complete the FAFSA form. List the college code of the barber or beauty school you plan to attend. Scholarships That Do Not Require Financial Need Are you good at essays and are you heading for an Oregon col lege? The Bob Hasson Memorial Fund Essay Scholarship offers gener ous awards (from $1,500 to $3,000) for the best essay written on "The Proper Use of Credit in the 21st Century." Are you of Native American heritage majoring in math or sci ence? If you are from Clackamas, Multnomah, or Washington counties in Oregon or Clark county in Washington and are of Native American descent, the Howard Vollum American Indian Scholarship might be for you. Are you a top student? The federal government offers the Robert C. Byrd renewable award for students with GPAs of 3.85 or above and SAT scores of at least 1300 (or ACT of at least 29). Linn-Benton Community College Short Term Training Programs These programs are available in the following areas: B Radiologic Technology: An 18-month intensive program that pre pares students through a progressive, outcomes-based educational format. B Public Safety Dispatcher (911) Program: This program is designed to provide students with a basic working knowledge of virtually all aspects relative to emergency communications. It is a 15-week program. This special award program is designed to provide students from under represented groups who are entering the University of Oregon in the fall of 2003 an opportunity to ensure a smooth transition from high school to college. B The Summer Bridge Program gives students a jump start on university work with an inter-cultural learning experience centered on course work in Native American literature, expository writing and contemporary Na tive American issues. B Students accepted for the Native American Summer Bridge Program will be provided with tuition, room and board on campus during the 8 week 2003 summer term (June 23 through August 15) and an allowance for books and school supplies. Upon completing summer session work, students will have earned 9 credits of college-level work (5 percent of total credits required for graduation) and will carry the honor of being a par ticipant in this program with them into their university career.
