Shuttle Disaster

Grand Ronde Tribal member and
Air Force Veteran Buddy White
lowers the American flag to half
mast in honor of the crew of the
space shuttle Columbia, which
broke apart during re-entry into
the earth's atmosphere on the
morning of Saturday, February 1.
Video evidence points to debris that
hit the left wing during takeoff as a
likely cause for the breakup. The
shuttle was at an altitude of over
200,000 feet and just minutes from
its scheduled landing in Florida. "Our
journey into space will go on," said
President Bush to the nation.
All seven members of the Interna
tional crew were lost. The Grand
Ronde community shared the
nation's grief over the loss of the
seven astronauts.
