Sam Simmons, Jr.
November 7, 1939 July 19, 2002
Sampson Patschal Simmons, Jr. passed away on July 19 in
McMinnville.
Sam was born at Chemawa Hospital in Salem to his mother Helen
Lucille and father Sampson Patschal Simmons. He had on older
brother, William Edward Simmons and five younger brothers and sis
ters; Walter Francis, Donald Herbert, Claudia Muriel, Le Roy David
(Buzz) and Deborah Jean. They all were born in the Grand Ronde
area and in 1957 when Sam was 18, the whole family moved to Los
Angeles, California. On November 23, 1958, Sam reported to the US
Army for duty, spending time in Germany until he was honorably
discharged January 13, 1960.
After the army, Sam returned to Grand Ronde for 5-6 years, but
then moved back to the Los Angeles area to live with family.
Sam returned home to the Grand Ronde area in the late 1980s and
lived the last 20 years here.
Sam never married or had children of his own, but had a lot of nieces
and nephews who loved him dearly. Sam was funny, always friendly
and loved animals (especially Great Danes) and Edsel cars. All chil
dren and even babies were drawn to him (maybe because he was quite
and didn't move quickly). He was fondly known as Uncle Sam the
candy man. He was kind-hearted and would give anything and some
times everything he owned to someone else if he thought they needed
it.
A friend made a statement that sums it all up, "If everyone in the
world were like Sammy there would be no war and no hungry chil
dren." Sam was buried in the Tribal cemetery on July 24.
