William Rife
1923 2002
A funeral for Tribal member William Leonard Rife was held Febru
ary 5 in the Tribal Cemetery.
Rife passed away on February. 2, in Grand Ronde. He was 78.
He was born September 7, 1923, in Salem.
He and Betty were married June 7, 1947, in Newport.
He lived in the Salem area most of his life. He worked at Conestoga
RV in Mt. Angel and also worked in the setup of manufactured homes.
He had lived in Grand Ronde since 1998.
Rife loved hunting, fishing, carving and caring for plants. He also
enjoyed bead work. He had become actively interested in Tribal heri
tage in recent years, family members said.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Marcia Bolton and Pearl
Mekenson, both of Grand Ronde, and Ruby Christensen of Baker City;
three sons, Ron Rife of Grand Ronde, Mike Rife of Springfield and
Steve Rife of Siletz; four sisters, Bessie Burgess of Eugene, Gladys
Cook and Ruby Golden, both of Prineville, and Clara Watts of Tulsa,
Oklahoma.; a brother, Robert Rife of Prineville; 22 grandchildren and
23 great-grandchildren.
