Deadline to Apply is April 17, 2002.
Numerous Diversity Scholarships are available for the 2002-2003 aca
demic year from the Wayne Shields Endowment. Scholarship awards are
$1,000 per year. The Diversity Scholarships are designed to promote di
versity in the student population, increase intercultural competencies,
broaden cultural awareness and understanding of African-American,
Asian-American, Pacific Islander, Latino, Native American and Alaska
Native cultures and enrich the educational experience for the mutual ben

The Tribe's Education Division recently completed construction of its
web page and it can be accessed via the Confederated Tribes of Grand
Ronde web site at www.grandronde.org, click " Tribal Government Pro
grams" then click "Education". An assortment of information is avail
able through this site: Program summaries and applications, links to schol
arship & internship opportunities as well as to various colleges and uni

SMART People Wanted to Volunteer Tribal Youth Sponsorship Program
SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) is looking for volunteers to
read with children at the Grand Ronde Elementary School. We are serv
ing 30 students but we still have students that aren't being served. Be
ing a volunteer consists of a one hour per week commitment through the
end of April 2002. Grand Ronde has SMART on Mondays and Wednes
days. We are especially light on Mondays and need volunteers. If you
are interested in helping a child please call the Grand Ronde Elementary
School at 503-879-5210. Leave a message for Anne Riley.
Name Contest
The Grand Ronde Tribal Housing Authority Board of Com
missioners is sponsoring a contest for suggested names for the
new 36 unit low-income family housing complex to tbe con
structed in Grand Ronde. Participants should submit their
name, address, phone number, suggested name for complex,
explanation of why you chose it, or what it's significance is to
them Submissions should be sent to the Housing Authority
office. Deadline is April 1. If your name is used, you will be
awarded Tribal blanket and will be recognized at the dedica
tion ceremony.
Poster Contest
AMERIND Risk Management Corporation
2002 National Fire and Home Safety Poster Contest
It's time for children within the six-county service area to
sharpen their crayons and dip their paintbrushes.
All submitted posters must illustrate a "fire safety" or "home
safety" theme.
Children in K- are eligible to participate. All entries must
be original and created by crayons, markers or paint Posters
must be SS" X 11" paper.
This years winner can select one of two prizes - $1,000 or a
trip to Walt Pisney World in Orlando, Florida in October 2002.
Entry forms are available through the Tribal Housing Authority:

Entries must be submitted to the Housing Authority Office no
later than May 1, 2002.

Youth Education Sponsorship (YE Sponsorship) program, formerly Sum
mer Sponsorship began in January 2002.
YE Sponsorship is a program which provides maximum funding of $200
to enrolled Tribal members grades K-12, including home schooling one
time per year to participate in school and extra-curricular activities or
programs.
You must request an application by contacting Chris Bailey at 800-422-0232
or 503-879-2101. Application must be returned completed in order
to be processed. Please allow two weeks for processing.
Funding is available until depleted. Please note that requesting an
application does not ensure funding and does not register the student for
the activity program.
Financial Skills for Families Course
The Small Business department is seeking interest for its financial skills
for families course; a six week class that teaches participants the basics
of budgeting. Participants who complete the course get 1 point
removed from their credit report. If you are interested or know of
someone else who may be interested in attending this class, contact
