PROPOSED ELECTION ORDINANCE AMENDMENTS OPEN FOR COMMENT The Tribal Council, in consultation with the Election Board and the Tribal Attorney's Office, has proposed amendments to the Election Ordinance. The first reading of the proposed amendments was made at the February 20, 2002, Tribal Council Meeting. The purpose of the amendments is to make various technical updates and substantive changes to the Ordinance to provide for an efficient elec tion process. The proposed amendments include, but are not limited to, the following: Modifying the roles of the Election Board and the Enrollment Office such that the Election Board will receive and maintain the Signature Verifi cation Forms and will prepare and distribute the Voters Address List rather than the Enrollment Office. Modifying the Signature Verification Form requirements to add as an alternative to the notarization requirement that a Tribal member may in stead attach a legible copy of a Tribal Identification Card, Drivers License, state issued Identification Card, or Passport which bears the signature of the Tribal member. Modifying the restriction on remaining, loitering or campaigning near the polling place on Election Day to extend to 150 feet of any entrance to the polling place. Modifying the absentee ballot provisions to provide that only those Tribal members who have a Signature Verification Form on file with the Election Board will be sent an absentee ballot. Modifying the absentee ballot provisions to provide that absentee ballots must be received at the location designated by the Board Chair person (usually the Post Office) by 12 PM (noon) on the day of the Elec tion. For a copy of the proposed Election Ordinance amendments, please contact the Tribal Attorney's Office at 503-879-2265. The Tribal Council invites comment on the proposed amendments.
