Smoke Signals
Dear Confederated Tribes of
Grand Ronde,
I read with a heavy heart the
passing of Ila Dowd. In 1930, my
mother and father bought five
acres of land from Ila's parents that
was located directly across the road
from where Joseph and Ila lived for
so many years. Although I am not
a Native American, growing up in
Grand Ronde was made extra spe
cial by friends and neighbors like
Ila and Joseph and their daughter
Joyce Dowd-Ham, who was like a
big sister to my brother and me. I
hope that the Confederated Tribes
of Grand Ronde are keeping a
record of the contributions to the
community that the HudsonDowd
families and others have made over
the years. Ila was truly a special
person and will be long remembered
by all who knew her.

Hello my name is Samuel Aro and
I would like to say thanks to a few
people that I came in contact with
on my recent visit to Grand Ronde!
My mother was suffering with her
knee replacement surgery so I quit
my job to be with her for her recov
ery. It seems she still has a little
trouble but I am sure she will be
just fine. When I came here I saw
a flyer in the Governance office for
GED classes so I thought I should
take some classes. When I went to
the Education building to sign up
Joanne Carr was in class and
Debbie Bachman,the secretary,
took me over to meet with Joanne
even though Joanne was in the
middle of class and said lets get
started now. From that point on
the ball was rolling and after not
being in school for 17V& years I am
finally a high school graduate and
now am looking forward to a degree
in Psychology or Engineering which
Kevin Simmons is helping me to
achieve. To these people I say
thanks: Joanne Carr, Kevin
Simmons, Ted Gross, Chemeketa
College and the Confederated
Tribes of Grand Ronde. Also, I
would like to thank my mother
Lana Takhar, and the rest of my
family, Tiffany Hudson, Brad Aro,
Doug Anderson and Brian and Lisa
Baker, for all of their support and I
hope not to let any one of them
down.
