Ila Dowd

Tribal Elder Ila R. Dowd passed away at the age of
93.
She was one of 14 children born to John B. and
Hattie (Sands) Hudson. Ila lived in Grand Ronde
most of her life, and she taught school in a one-room
schoolhouse in Grand Ronde for several years. She
worked at Blue Lake Cannery until her retirement,
then worked as a CNA. She had attended Mt. Angel
College.
She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and spending time with her daughter
and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jo
seph Dowd in 1982; and a son, Lowell.
She is survived by her daughter, Joyce Ham of Portland; three grand
children, Alan Ham, Daniel Ham and Francine Peterson; and seven
great-grandchildren.
Rosary was Wednesday, January 2. Mass was Thursday, January
3, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Grand Ronde. Interment will be
in the Tribal Cemetery in Grand Ronde. Contributions may be made
to Retirement Sisters of St. Mary, care of Bollman Funeral Home in
Dallas.
Francis Merrier
Tribal Elder Francis "Frank" Lee Mercier, born on
May 12, 1944, died in his home, of natural causes
November 15, 2001. A funeral was held at the Con
federated Tribes of Grand Ronde Tribal Cemetery,
Reverend Joel Boyce officiated. Frank was born in
Grand Ronde. His parents were Hubert Harry Mer
cier and the late Martha Celeste Mercier. Frank is
survived by his father, his partner Connie Joy Charles, and his chil
dren Teri Lynn Mercier and Kelly Stuart Mercier. Frank worked for
Vern Justin logging until 1998 when he retired.
Lonnie Norwest
Tribal member Lonnie Jay Norwest, 31, a former area resident, died
December 16 in Anchorage, Alaska.
He was born September 29, 1970 in Ketchikan, Alaska.
In 1971 he moved with his family to the West Valley area. He at
tended school in Willamina.
He worked in Newport for a construction company for a few years.
In 1998 he moved to Anchorage and worked for Allison Relocation
Moving Co. He loved to hunt and fish and help people in need. He
was a member of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde.
Survivors include his parents, Marce and Sharon Norwest of Grand
Ronde; brothers, Johnny Norwest, Melvin Norwest and Robin Norwest,
all of Grand Ronde, and John Norwest of Salmon Arm, B.C.; sisters,
Shirley Norwest of Salem, Jackie Brown of Benton City, Wash., Carmen
Norwest of Portland, LaDonna Williams and Daniele Freeman of Grand
Ronde.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Marcellus Jr., Andrew
and Lyle.
Funeral services were held Dec. 22 at the Tribal Cemetery.
Adamson's Sheridan Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Melvin McKnight
Tribal Elder Melvin "Corky" McKnight, 65, of Willamina, died De
cember 24 in McMinnville.
He was born December 5, 1936 in Grand Ronde.
He graduated from high school in Schurz, Nev., and worked as a
logger most of his life.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Clarice of Eugene; sons, Melvin Jr. and
Arthur, both of Springfield; daughter, Judy of Eugene; brothers, Wayne,
Robert and Richard; sisters, Judith Olsen, Beverly Cooney, Dorothy
Law, Maxine Leno and Barbara Feehan; two grandchildren and one
great-grandchild.
Services were held Friday at Adamson's Sheridan Funeral Home with
burial in the Tribal cemetery.

in Kelso Washington at
the Red Lion Inn.
The newlyweds honeymooned at
the Lodge in Grand Ronde and
then to the California Redwoods.
They are making their
home in Kelso, Washington.
