DECEMBER 15, 2001 Smoke Signals 11 Non-Tribal Spouse Insurance Information Requested Requests have been posed at the General Council meetings regard ing the age requirements of the Non-Tribal Elder Spouse Insurance program. The question asked was "Can we lower the age requirement of the non-Tribal spouse?" Some Tribal Elders have married spouses younger then themselves and be cause of this the spouse is not eli gible for the Tribal insurance. If you are an Elder and have married someone younger than yourself and would like to see the age re quirement lowered, please fill out and return the information re- DDDaODaDDDDDDDI quested below. Three positions open to Tribal of non-Tribal applicants. The Grand Ronde Tribal Hous ing Authority has three Board Com missioners whose terms expire in March 2002. Anyone who is inter ested in serving in one of these po sitions and who has housing re lated experience to qualify for the position; is ' encouraged to attend the January Board meeting. The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 22 at 5:30 p.m. at the Housing Authority office in Grand Ronde. Please call to confirm. This is an opportunity to: 1) ob serve how the board functions, 2) become acquainted with the types of issues that are regularly dis cussed and 3) determine if you are seriously interested in such a posi tion now or in the future. The three-year terms are on a ro tating basis and expire each March. Both Tribal members and non Tribal people are eligible to serve on the board and incumbents are eligible to reapply. Interested persons should have a demonstrated interest in housing and experience in the housing field in some capacity, such as: O affordable housing development P property management O residential building construction O housing financing O housing planning other housing related areas The Board oversees all housing development, management and op erations for the Tribe, and is re sponsible for policy-making deci sions. The Board currently meets at 5:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at the Housing Au thority office in Grand Ronde. Participating In the Royalty Court Is an excellent chance for young Tribal women to represent the Tribe In a positive way, It does require com mitment and time, but Is a tremendous honor. There will be dance, proto col, craft and speaking classes that will help prepare yourself to be on Royalty. Any young lady who would like to participate In Royalty to gain experi ence may as a Princess and not compete this year for a Queen position. We encourage any Interested young lady who Is a Tribal member, between the ages of 5 and 21 , to Join us. Participants must be an enrolled member of the Grand Ronde Tribe, be alcohol and drug free, be childless and never married. If school age, must be attending school (private or public) full-time. Girls must be within the following age categories by January 15, 2001 : Miss Tiny Tot 5-8 years of age Junior Miss Grand Ronde 9-1 4 years of age Senior Miss Grand Ronde 15-18 years of age Miss Grand Ronde 1 9-21 years of age Participants must have their own regalia. It Is not the responsibility of the Royalty Board, Tribal Council, or any other Tribal program to provide. Members of the Royalty Court are not paid positions. Although, the chosen Queens and Princesses will receive motel fees and a set amount for travel expenses for attending required events. For all fund-raisers and ac tivities that Royalty is involved In, the court and their families or sponsors are required to participate. All the members on the Royalty Court must show good Judgement by not participating In any activities that could bring adverse publicity to themselves or the Tribe. All members of Royalty must comply with the Royalty guidelines and the Royalty agreement. The deadline for submitting a application is January 15, 2002.
