Wolftree, Inc. receives $80,000 grant More Oregon school children receive hands-on, outdoor science education through the Wolftree program thanks to an $80,000 grant from the Spirit Mountain Community Fund. The money will be used in the underserved communities of Polk, Yamhill and Marion County schools. Wolftree works in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management to run programs in watershed ecology (Cascade Streamwatch and Highland Ecology) throughout Washington and Oregon. Wolftree recently won the National Rise to the Future Award presented by several national fish and wildlife organizations for their work in science edu cation. "Wolftree's mission is to serve people, their communities, and the earth through innovative science education programs in the outdoors," said Dale Waddell, Executive Director. Getting young people excited about science, nature and learning may be the most enduring contribution we can provide to a community." The grant will provide pro gramming to 75-new classrooms and approximately 1,800 children. All 75 programs are in place in schools located throughout Clackamas, Multnomah, Polk, Tillamook and Washington counties during the 2000-2001 school year. Junior Achievement ( JA) programs provide a forum for role models to influ ence students' attitudes toward education, business and the workplace. Edu cators continue to rely on JA to bridge the gap between classroom theory and workforce reality. Problems of school drop out, economic illiteracy, and lack of workforce readiness are all addressed by JA's Elementary School Programs. The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde have actively supported JA through the Spirit Mountain Community Fund and Spirit Mountain Ca sino. In addition to providing financial support, several employees from Spirit Mountain have volunteered to teach JA classes.
