Oregon Approves Willamette
Lamprey Eel Harvest Season
The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission has approved a six-week season
for sport and commercial Pacific lamprey eel harvest at Willamette Falls, and
implemented several changes intended to conserve the lamprey population.
The 2001 Pacific lamprey season opened Saturday, June 16. Harvest of
lampreys for personal use is allowed Saturdays through Tuesdays until July
31. Commercial harvest is permitted Mondays and Tuesdays until 14,400
pounds is harvested. In 2000, harvesters fished seven days a week for 3
months.
Both commercial and personal use harvesters must have a permit from the
Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. Harvesters are restricted to har
vest by hand or hand powered tools.
The commission expressed a desire to provide some time when personal use
harvesters would not have to compete with commercial harvesters, and also
to provide an extended time period each week to enable lampreys to migrate
above the falls without harvest.
