Adult Education Services May Lapse Dorna Riding In resigned her position as the Tribe's Adult Education Pro gram Coordinator effective May 22, 2001. Education Division is currently seeking to contract an instructor for part time hours until the position is filled. We hope to have an instructor available on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. by the second week in June and through July. Please contact the Education Division to confirm that we have contracted a temporary instructor after mid-June 2001. Chemeketa Community College campuses have Adult Education programs that can be utilized as an alternate program while our program is not in operation. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes. Experience with Chinuk-wawa will be helpful, but all individuals are encouraged to attend. The class will focus on natural learning through semi-immersion in the language. TRADITIONAL CARVING TOOL CLASS Wednesday Nights, July 11-August 1. Cultural Education Coordinator, Tony Johnson will be teaching a carving class focused on producing the tools necessary for tradi tional NW coast carving. This will be the first of a number of carving classes to be offered in the future. Participants will make a traditional adze. If you are interested, sign up early space is limited to 15 individuals. SPRUCE ROOT AND RUSH GATHERING DAY Wednesday, August 22. Accomplished basket maker and teacher Margaret Mathewson will guide this all day trip to gather traditional Grand Ronde basketry materials. Spruce Root and Rush will be the focus, but other materials will also be discussed. Space is limited. TRADITIONAL BASKETRY Wednesday nights, August 22-September 12. Accomplished basket maker and teacher Margaret Mathewson will teach this four night class focused on traditional Grand Ronde basketry. Johnson for more information or to register: 503-879-2084 or tonyjohnson grandronde.org National Ironworkers Training Program for American Indians If you are 20 years of age or older, have an interest in the ironworking craft, and are prepared to complete 12 weeks of training you must: Provide a Birth Certificate and Degree of Indian Blood; Be physically fit; Have a High School Diploma or GED; Be able to read and write the English Language; Be willing to relocate (training is in Broadview, IL); Students will be housed in a location convenient to the training center. A Subsistence Allowance of $210 (currently) will be provided per week. After completing this program placement into the work force will be provided by the National Iron Workers Training Program; along with a $350 check for structural or reinforcing tools paid directly to the local union or training cen ter. The Ironworkers is a college degree program. This program offers college credits that transfer to a Bachelor's degree program.
