10 JUNE 1, 2001 Smoke Signals Contemporary Basket Making Pichette Family Reunion Sanda Henny, a Grand Ronde Tribal member and accomplished basket maker will be teaching contemporary basket making in June. Her work was recently featured in Smoke Signals, and she currently has baskets on dis play at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art in Salem. Sam will be teaching the technique of making soft baskets with yarn and hemp. The class will be limited to 20 individuals and will be held on Wednesday nights, June 6-27. Speed Racer , HEAVY METAL - Last Year, Tribal member Nathan Rolston's race team finished in second place In the point standings at Sunset Speed way In the street stock "B" class. Rolston said the hard work put In by he and teammate Andy Hoyt made their 1979 Monte Carlo a contender for the point's championship. Rolston and Hoyt never missed a start during the season and garnered 10 top ten finishes a long the way. Rolston wants to thank his sponsors Radio Shack, Marvin Grout Trucking, Strong Metal's Tillamook Tire and Hoyt's Farms for making the season possible. Lopez Honored for Her Commitment Tribal member Connie Lopez was recently honored by the Papago Agency Office of Indian Programs for appreciation of her support and commitment to the Santa Rosa Boarding School in Sells, Arizona, where she lives and works. After receiving her education as a teacher, Lopez went to the Santa Rosa Boarding School, where she has been for 27 years. At different times during her tenure, she has taught grades one through six. Lopez has volunteered for many extracurricular activities over the years. She has volunteered to help others and has been on many different commit tees. For many years Connie has worked with fundraising for Student of the Month and Award Day prizes at Santa Rosa. She has frequently used her own time, transportation and talent to raise money needed to purchase all the awards. Twice a month she organizes the sale of food to raise funds. She has also faithfully attended every single PTO meeting. She is well known in the community and a friend to all of the staff, who recognized her efforts with several awards for her promptness and commit ment. , Lopez regularly reads Smoke Signals and enjoys reading about the ac complishment of other Tribal members.
