The Education department would like to
congratulate Tribal member Deann
Dickinson for obtaining her GED Diploma.
Deann took advantage of a program at
Chemeketa that offers six credit hours free
of charge after you obtain your GED.
Deann was asked what motivated her and
what her goals and plans , are for the near
future:
What motivated you to obtain your
GED? My son Anthony motivated me. Also
by talking with April Campbell (Higher
Education Specialist). You can't get schol
arships for college without a GED. I bought
the $20 book and studied it. I had been out
of school for a couple of years.
What do you see as the benefits of getting of GED? You can't qualify
for most programs without having a GED; more scholarships are available
and more school options.
What are your plans? Right now I'm attending Chemeketa Community
College full-time since January. I am taking the general educational re
quirementsprerequisites. I am deciding between studying for a bachelor's
degree in public health administration or a 2-year program in Nursing. I
prefer a school that is nearby possibly Western Oregon University. I
Do you like Chemeketa?, I like Chemeketa, I just wish there were more
classes available to take at the Grand Ronde site.
Deann Dickinson is the mother
of Anthony Simmons and the
daughter of Debra Simmons.

In early March, a new
headstone was
placed in the Grand
Ronde Cemetery.
It marked the burial
grounds of 199 of our
ancestors who where
brought home last
year by the Cultural

staff. It took four
people to move the
1,000-pound stone.
