Native Storyteller Thomas Doty to Perform
in Grand IRonde and Willamina
10 FEBRUARY 15, 2001
Oregon Native storyteller and author Thomas Doty will perform Dote
& Coyote: Stories from the Native West on February 22 and 23 at
Grand Ronde and Willamina schools.
In this one-man storytelling, Doty performs traditional stories from the
Native peoples of the West as well as original stories, poems and monologues,
including his popular Dote and Coyote stories. He has been called "a master
of his art."
Doty stresses that his performances are for people of all ages. "Children
delight in the adventures of Coyote and Dear and Crow," he says. "Adults
look beyond the narrative to see what the stories offer a world searching for
solutions."
Dots performances are staged simply without sets, props or masks. They
come alive with movements, gestures, expressions, voices, and words.
For three summers Doty wrote, co-directed and performed in the Univer
sity of MinnesotaSouthern Oregon State College productions of Dancing
Through Dreamtime, a Native storytelling and modern dance project. He
has performed at the Oregon Shakespearean Festival's Daedalus Project,
and for ten years he performed and taught in Oregon's Arts in Education
program.
Doty is the co-founder and co-director of The International Folklore Project,
and Storyteller and Author in Residence at Dragonfly Place, a Siskiyou Moun
tain Retreat and Center for the Study of Storytelling, Literature and Performance.
is performance in Grand Ronde and Willamina is sponsored by the
Willamina School District Indian Education program, the Confed
erated Tribes of Grand Ronde's Youth Education program and Polk
County Prevention program. The Indian Education department of the Wil
