Imagine driving your vehicle down
the street and having your engine
tell you it doesn't want to go any far
ther. The engine suddenly makes a
loud bang. You sit in silence along
the road. Something is very wrong
you think, even before you look in
your wallet. Now comes the time
when you need somebody who you
can trust.
If you are an Oregon City resident,
one place should come to mind.
Tribal member Steve Manangan and
his wife Berta own and operate Save
On Automotive. The business has
been operating for seven years.
"I specialize in engine swapping,
says Manangan. "We also do front
end work, such as timing belts, UV
joints, repair tires, window repair,
brakes and oil changes."
The reason Manangan went into
business is for self-sufficiency and
the ability to help others.
"I like to be able to be there for
people, and having this automotive
business allows me to do this," Man
angan said. "I can get them in and
out of my shop within one day if they
have a problem. I can fix all me
chanical problems."
Some of the challenges Manangan
has faced are expansion and the lo
cation of the business.
"I can't grow too fast, and I don't
have the best location," says Man
angan. "The growth of the business
has been a very big challenge for me."
Manangan said when the business
first started, the challenge was get
ting the recognition as being a good
and trustworthy mechanic.
Another challenge is difficulties
finding work through various meth
ods of advertisement. Manangan
said it's tough to find where you want
to spend the most money that will
bring in the most business.
He said he likes being independent
and making decisions himself. It in
creases his responsibility during the
course of each day.
"I am willing to relocate," said Man
angan. "I would even like to relocate
to the Grand Ronde area someday."
One of the best things a mechanic
can have is reliable tools. Manangan
has only Snap-On tools.
"They are more expensive, but well
worth it because they will last longer
because of the quality," Manangan
said.
