Harrison Speaks on Elders'
Issues in Nation's Capitol
By Brent Merrill
Grand Ronde Tribal Chair Kath
ryn Harrison was recently honored
by the Department of Health and
Human Services Administration on
Aging by being one of only four
Tribal leaders in the nation asked to
speak on Elders' issues at a special
"Listening Session."
Despite an extremely busy sched
ule and short notice, Harrison made
time to go because of the importance
of caring for our Elders.
Grand Ronde Tribal Chair Kathryn Har
rison C'eft), Jeanette Takumura of the
Department of Health and Human Ser
vices' Administration on Aging and
Wellness Coordinator Bonnie Tom pic
tured at the Listening Session in Wash
ington D.C. Harrison spoke to those
in attendance about the importance
of Elder care within the Grand Ronde
Tribal Community.
"It was an honor," said Harrison. "I
had a chance to tell what we have
done for our Elders here in Grand
Ronde. We met for a day and a half
and talked about Elders' issues the
main issue being Elder abuse and
how to approach that delicate subject."
Harrison said the event showcased
10 outstanding Elders' programs
throughout the nation and displays
were set up to further explain each
program's efforts.
"Discussion were
held and presenta
tions were made and
then we came up
with ideas and gave
some recommenda
tions to the Council
on Aging," said Har
rison. Tribal Health and
Wellness Coordina
tor Bonnie Tom ac
companied Harrison
on the trip to Wash
ington D.C. and said it was an im
portant event.
"It was important for us to be in
volved as a Tribe because of our pro
grams that we have for the Elders,"
said Tom. "We have the USDA pro
gram and Title VI grant which funds
the senior meal site, but it also ef
fects all of our services for Elders."
Senior Citizens: Be Aware of Scam
A warning was posted by the
Sheridan's Senior Mealsite officials
that Elders should beware of a scam
that deals with Meals on Wheels cli
ents and others.
Meals on Wheels Mealsite Coordi
nator Sally Sayre warns that the
mealsite does not send people out to
collect money, nor solicit donations
over the phone.
Donations are excepted. Seniors
should make the payments to the
person who delivers the meals or
send a check to the Senior Mealsite,
125 N. Bridge St., Sheridan, OR
97378.
Sayre said there are also reports
that scam artists are asking for do
nations of cash over the phone as well
as seeking money door to door.
Any person who is visited by scam
artists should immediately call 9-1-1
with a description.
Be wary of callers who want to send
someone over to pick up your contri
bution. Tell them you want to use
U.S. mail, don't give cash and write a
check made payable to the charity.
