Oregon Children's Theatre has re
ceived a $25,000 grant from the Con
federated Tribes of Grand Ronde
through the Spirit Mountain Com
munity Fund in support of it's in
school workshop entitled Loud &
Clear. This workshop i3 specifically
designed for teachers to help their
students meet CIM (Certificate of
Initial Mastery) and CAM (Certifi
cate of Advanced Mastery) bench
marks for public speaking.
Students learn techniques to im
prove oral presentation, public
speaking, voice projection and, most
important, confidence. Additionally,
the special sections of the workshop
focus on educating teachers on
coaching and encouraging their stu
dents in their presentation skills.
The donation from the Spirit
Mountain Community Fund will
make it possible for teachers from 40
elementary schools in Yamhill, Polk,
and Marion counties to participate in
Loud & Clear workshops at their
schools.
"The Community Fund's support of
our in-school programming is an im
portant component of our efforts to
better serve children and families,"
said Executive Director Sondra
Pearlman. "The investment made by
the Grand Ronde Tribe helps us ex
tend our reach to provide public
speaking skills to both teachers and
students throughout the region."
"Nonprofit organizations are con
tinually faced with the challenge of
finding the funds necessary to oper
ate programs that serve the commu
nity," said Pearlman. "Having orga
nizations like the Grand Ronde Tribe
recognize the importance of the work
we are doing increases our ability to
attract funding from other donors."
Now in its 13th season, Oregon
Children's Theatre, a resident com
pany of the Portland Center for the
Performing Arts, celebrated its one
millionth patron last April during the
presentation of Charlotte's Web. The
organization reaches a large num
ber of youth from a wide geographic
area for a minimal cost. The aver
age price of tickets for school perfor
mances is $5.

SMILE Program Expands Thanks to Grant
The Science and Math Investigative Learning Experiences (SMILE) pro
gram of Oregon State University is the recipient of a $16,494 grant from the
Spirit Mountain Community Fund to support the operation of full SMILE
Clubs at Grand Ronde Elementary School in Yamhill County and Indepen
dence Elementary School in Polk County. The SMILE program was estab
lished in 1988 to provide academic enrichment to 80 middle school students
in four largely Native American schools. Today, the program has expanded
considerably and serves nearly 800 students, grades 4-12, in 39 schools.
The mission of the SMILE program is to help elementary and secondary
school students acquire the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary to qualify
for higher education. The goal is to increase the numbers of historically
underrepresented and other educationally disadvantaged students who gradu
ate high school and are prepared to enroll in higher education and pursue
careers in science, math, engineering, health professions and teaching.
Since its creation in 1988, the program has served more than 2,900 stu
dents, provided professional development for more than 200 teachers, and
impacted the educational experiences of tens of thousands of students in the
10 districts it has operated. The addition of Independence Elementary School
brings SMILE to an eleventh district - Central School District. More than
85 percent of SMILE students graduate from high school and about 80 per
cent of these graduates go on to higher education.
