Tribe hosts Willamette National Forest Tour
On-going government-to-government relationship builds future.

The Confederated Tribes of
Grand Ronde hosted a group
from the Willamette National For
est Ranger District's for a tour of the
Tribe's Reservation and Tribal cam
pus on August 28-29.
The five ranger districts and the
Tribe came together for a two-day
team-building and learning events.
The ranger districts sent 22 people
for the tour.
The Tribe and Forest Service
signed a Memorandum of Under
standing (MOU) in January of this
year. Under the agreement, the
Forest Service and Tribe will work
together on projects and gain input
and ideas that affect all parties in
volved. The Forest Service took a tour of
Tribal programs and buildings, vis
ited the Reservation and Spirit Moun
tain. They held a mini-pow-wow in
the Tribal Governance Center.

The Willamette Forest Service, Tribal Elders, Tribal Council members and
staff enjoy dancing and drumming during the mini pow-wow. The For
est Service took the time to learn about Tribal traditions, have lunch
with the Elders and visit Spirit Mountain. All this is made possible with
the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in Janu
ary between the Tribe and Forest Service.

Portland Art Museum Honors Elizabeth Cole Butler Collection;

One of the most dramatic pieces of
art in the Portland Art Museum is
now on display in the new Confed
erated Tribes of Grand Ronde Cen
ter for Native American Art. The
Raven to Sun Transformation cos
tume bursting with bright red
and sharp black color is easily one
of the centerpieces of the museum's
newest wing.
Now, visitors usually treated to the
magnificent sculptures of Constanin
Brancusi and Pablo Picasso, can also
wander through a plethora of Na
tive artistic treasures.
Two separate grants totaling $1 mil
lion from the Tribe's Spirit Mountain
Community Fund gave new life to the
museum leadership's dream of being
the country's foremost showcase for
Native American art. As part of the
Grand Ronde Tribe's gaming agree
ment with the State of Oregon, six per
cent of casino profits are shared with
deserving organizations throughout
the state by way of the Spirit Moun
tain Community Fund.
In late August, the museum hosted
a dinner for a variety of people and
organizations that were involved in
making the dream come true.
Native American Arts Council
President Emily Andrews gave the
introductions at the dinner and said
the importance of acquiring Native
American art has never been
greater. She said the fact that Na
tive art is disappearing rapidly has
brought the effort to the forefront of
the art community 'to do' list.
Andrews said she wanted our
grandchildren, great-grandchildren
and great, great grandchildren to
look back on the turn of the new cen
tury with respect and thankfulness.
She said the only way to ensure that
future is to maintain the effort now.
