Smoke Signals
Dear Smoke Signals,
We would like to thank the people
who selected us as Grand Marshals
for the 2000 Pow-wow Parade. It
was quite an honor and fun too, es
pecially with the convertible.
Thank you,
Verna Larsen, Roll 419

Dear Editor,
My wife and I would like to express
our sincere appreciation to Carrie
Murray-Aaron. She has gone way
out of her way for us since our mov
ing back from here from Canada. She
is a great asset to the Tribe and we
are glad that she has been hired on
permanently. Keep up the good work
Carrie.

Dear Editor,
The Federal Violence Against
Women ACT (VAWA), which has
provided programs, laws and over 1.5
billion dollars in funding for domes
tic violence shelters and other ser
vices to end domestic violence and
sexual assault, WILL EXPIRE Octo

The Tribe is one of the VAWA grant
recipients and can stand to lose a sig

doesn't reauthorize the grant.
Please take the time to visit http:
www.stopfamilyviolence.org and
send a pre-written letter to your rep
resentative. It takes less then three
minutes to complete.
Thank you,

The purchase of books and expansion of the SMART reading program in a partnership
with the Blazers is just one example of how Oregon benefits from the Grand Ronde
Tribes and Spirit Mountain Community Fund. The Community Fund gives 6 of profits
from Spirit Mountain Casino to local schools, health care, environmental protection,
and other worthy programs. Since its 1997 inception, thousands of Oregonians have
shared in the benefits of the Community Fund, proving that the spirit of giving something
back is alive and well at Spirit Mountain.
Dear Smoke Signals,
I would like to take a few moments
to personally thank our Public Rela
tions crew.
I hope that they won't be too em
barrassed or uncomfortable to print
this in "Letters."
I believe that there is a lot of work
that they do that sometimes goes
unnoticed or unappreciated. It is not
uncommon to see them out on week
ends and nights taking photos of our
events and activities, while we play
and relax.
I believe Smoke Signals keeps
many of us up-to-date with what is
happening, not only with our own
Tribe, but other important issues
being dealt with that could affect us.
Thank you Brent, Kim, Justin and
Teresa. You and your work is much
appreciated by myself and my family.

Thank you
from the bottom of my heart
At the end of WW II we, the Dutch
Resistance, never asked for any med
als nor any recognition for the help
the Allied forces received during
those dark days in history.
It was however very uplifting to
me that I received un-asked for rec
ognition from the Grand Ronde Vet
erans and the entire Grand Ronde
Tribe.
Over the past six years I have been
giving speeches in schools and librar
ies in several counties and received
many encouraging letters to continue
this effort.
The recognition I received at the
last Veterans' Pow-Wow, was in my
opinion the nicest I did receive. It is
therefore seen by me, that our en
deavor during the three and a half
years of help to the Allied forces has
not been forgotten.
I am grateful that I came out alive
and am able to talk about it, but I
am very sorry that about 1,320 of my
fellow Resisters never did and paid
the ultimate price.
After all, Freedom, Liberty and
Justice for all, is priceless.
Yours Truly,
Gus Smoorenburg
