Smoke Signals
Dear Editor and
fellow Tribal members:
I would like to ask for your sup
port for three candidates that I be
lieve will help the Tribe to continue
to grow and prosper in the future. I
believe that Ed Pearsall, Val Grout
and Shelley Hanson are outstand
ing individuals and excellent candi
dates for Tribal Council. I have
worked closely with each of them for
several years and have found them
to be outstanding leaders and sup
porters of the Tribe.
Ed Pearsall has the combination of
education, experience, honesty and
strength that we need in these in
creasingly complex times. He stands
up for what he believes in and votes
in the best interest of all Tribal mem
bers, regardless of where they live.
Val Grout has been a devoted sup
porter of the Tribal Elders for as long
as I have known her. Her years of
Tribal Council experience also con
tribute to her qualifications. She is
a fine person who has continued to
serve the Tribe in a positive way de
spite losses in her family and other
personal challenges.
We are fortunate to have a candi
date of Shelley Hanson's qualifica
tions. Shelley has a master's degree
in administration and a wealth of ex
perience in business. She worked for
years in the Tribe's Small Business
Development and has done a terrific
job developing complex businesses for
Spirit Mountain Corporation. It is
encouraging to have talented and
educated young Tribal members of
fer to serve on Tribal Council and we
should offer our support.
All of these candidates are positive
and know how to get things done.
They also have the strength and
courage to stand up for what they
believe in 'and do what is right for
the Tribe. There are many other ca
pable individuals running for Tribal
Council this year, but I believe Ed,
Val and Shelley can take the Tribe
to the highest level of achievement.
None of these candidates asked for
my support. I simply believe they
are the best people for these impor
tant jobs.
Sincerely,
Bruce Thomas

Dear Editor,
I wish to thank Juan Sifuentez and
Jimmy Brandon for fixing my flat
tire. I always knew I was a member
of the Tribe, but I have had quite a
time proving it. But with the help
from my wonderful family and the
enrollment committee I am now offi
cial and truly belong!
When I came out the Governance
Building, I discovered I had a flat
tire. I went in to see if there was
some place close I could call in
stead, Shelly called for help and in
no time Juan showed up, then
Jimmy and my tire was changed.
They also gave me directions to a tire
shop in Salem. Thank you again.
It's nice to know I belong to such car
ing people.
God Bless,
Anna Hannan

was quite a job but we did it and ev

Dear Smoke Signals,
This is just a letter to thank all
those involved in setting up and
making it possible to come together
and share our beliefs at the cultural
meeting on July 2 at Grand Ronde.
I really enjoyed all those who at
tended and those who were asked to
speak! Myself being an ordained
minister for only 18 months, it meant
a great step in my career as a worker
for the lord. I am looking forward to
more such meetings in the future. I
would also like a special thanks to go
to Judy Myers who rented my wife
and I a room at the Spirit Mountain
Lodge.
Again, thanks to all
