Smoke Signals
Many changes are taking place
in the Tribal Education Division
By Marion Mercier
We are currently working hard to
fill open positions in the division that
have been vacant for some time. I
have accepted the position as the Di
vision Manager, which has now left
the Education Specialist position va
cant. We hope to have that position
filled by the beginning of this next
Fall TermSemester.
In the mean time, I will work hard
to provide the best service possible to
the students in the Higher Educa
tion Program, Adult Vocational
Training Program and the Tribal
Trust Fund Scholarship Program.
Students, please be patient as it may
take a little longer to respond to your
calls than it has in the past, but I
assure you that I will keep up my
end of things and have everything
in order prior to the first day of class
providing that you have submitted
all required items to the Tribal pro
gram and to the school you are at
tending. The Adult Education Coordinator
position is currently in hiring nego
tiations and we will have a full-time
coordinator on board by mid-August
2000. This will allow us to offer a
full service program again that will
include GED individual and class
room instruction, on-site assess
ments, coordinating community edu
cation offering, assisting with trans
portation to testing sites, referral ser
vices and coordinating services with
other agenciesprograms. We are
looking forward to having our Adult
Education Program up and running
again.
We have several new hires in vari
ous programs these past few weeks.
Vikki Bishop recently accepted the
position of Early Childhood Educa
tion Director and is doing commend
able work in that position. This move
left vacant the Site SupervisorSocial
Services and Health Coordinator po
sition which has been filled by Danis
Bazzy-Bucknell. We welcome
Danis to our programs and feel for
tunate to have gained an experi
enced and committed employee.
Youth Education Program Tutor
position has been filled by Richard
Sohappy. Richard has been work
ing in this program for some time as
a temporary employee and has been
doing a great job working with our
students in 6 through 12th grade.
We are pleased that Richard is part
of the Youth Education Program
team.
Courtney Galligher and Natalie
Torres have also been hired as tem
porary summer employees.
Courtney Galligher is assisting the
program in reaching and maintain
ing health and safety standards for
the home care provider component
of our Child Care Program. New
Health and Safety Standard re
quirements have been recommended
by the Federal Child Care Develop
ment Fund (CCDF) Grant program.
Grantees must address and meet the
new requirements in order to receive
continued funding. I urge the par
ticipants enrolled in the Child Care
program to contact Courtney to co
ordinate a visit to their home care pro
vider to review for compliance to the
standards as soon as possible if you
have not done so. The CCDF Home
Care program component is admin
istered by the Pam Warren from the
Tribe's Social Services Division.
Natalie Torres is filling in the posi
tion as the Lead Before & After Care
Tutor for the remainder of the sum
mer program. Natalie is doing a very
good job in the program and the kids
really like having her there.
Tribal Graduate Scholarships increase
to help meet growing costs
Tribal Council approved the request to increase the Education Trust Fund
Tribal Graduate Scholarship amount to $10,000 for full-time students and to
$5,000 for half-time students per the academic year. This increase will help
students to meet the increasing costs of attending a graduate level program.
Support for the request was generated out of the Higher Education Program
and the Tribal Education Committee. All people involved recognized the
need to better financially assist students in this category. Scholarship appli
cations are available at the Tribal Education Office. The next selection pro
cess will take place in Spring of 2001 for the 200102 academic year with
April 30, 2001 being the deadline to apply.
Education Committee seeking applicants.

Summer Sponsorships 2000
In it's third year, the Tribally-funded sponsorship program for summer youth activi
ties was created to encourage and support youths involvement in school. This year, 77
Tribal youth benefitted from this summer sponsorship program, which is the largest
number of requests to date. The Youth Education Programs begins announcing this
program in March of each year. It is available to all Tribal youth where ever they
live. At this time all available money has been distributed. The youth listed below each
received a sponsorship with a maximum of a $200. Congratulations to all of you!
