Second reburial held
At dawn on Saturday, June 10, the remains of 19 human remains were
reburied in the Grand Ronde Cemetery. In drizzling rain, a group of Tribal
people offered their prayers for these victims of desecrated graves. After the
graveside service, a memorial lunch was held at the Community Center.
The Grand Ronde Color Guard, accompanied by Eagle Beak Drum, opened
the event with a posting of the flags.
The remains of our Tribal ancestors were put to rest in a single grave next to
that of 180 other men, women and children who were buried last October. All
of these people had experienced a common fate. For over 100 years, the re
mains of Native American people have been stolen from their graves and taken
to various institutions for study and display. The Native American Graves
Protection and Repatriation Act of 1990 allowed Tribes to finally reclaim the
remains of these people. It is our hope that at last they rest in peace.
