JULY 1, 2000 7 Extra deputies on duty 4th of July weekend to ensure safety The Yamhill County Sheriffs Of fice will be joining more than 300 law enforcement agencies in Oregon and Washington, as well as British Co lumbia, in a stepped-up traffic safety enforcement effort around the July 4th holiday weekend. The multi-agency effort is a part of the Three Flags International Safety Belt campaign, aimed at saving lives and reducing the num ber of injuries and deaths due to traf fic crashes. The ten-day enforcement campaign begins Friday, June 30 and concludes on Sunday, July 9. The focus for this Three Flags cam paign will be targeting speeding vio lations, impaired or drunk drivers and insuring proper seat belt or child safety seat usage. Yamhill County Sheriffs deputies will be patrolling Highway 18 and 99W, as well as local smaller feeder routes, to maintain safe routes for motorists who may be traveling to the Oregon Coast or other vacation des tinations. Deputies will be reminding drivers that children under the age 12 should be safely restrained in the back seat of a vehicle, with children under either age four or less than 40 pounds weight riding a correctly in stalled safety seat. "Never have a child car seat up front, especially in cars equipped with air bags," says Yamhill County Sheriff Norm Hand. "Please also re member that air bags are a 'supple mental' restraint system, they assist the seat belt during a crash. The air bag does not eliminate the need to wear a seat belt, in fact since an air bag deploys at about 200 miles per hour, the driver or passenger who is not belted in may be seriously injured when the air bag inflates."
