Dear Editor,
It will soon be time for Council elec
tions. We need to keep Council mem
bers who are doing a good job.
Margaret Provost is honest, ca
pable, concerned, dedicated to her
people, and living in the midst of our
problems and issues that affect us all.
We need her expertise and matri
archal wisdom on Council.
I thank Margaret for her steadfast
devotion to all Tribal members.

To Tribal members,
Soon it will be time for Council elec
tions. We need to elect Margaret Pro
vost who will do a good job. Marga-,
ret Provost is hard working, capable,
very honest and more than fair.
She is right on top of the problems
and issues that affect the Tribe and
more than willing to explain what is
going on.
We absolutely need her on the
Council. I thank her for unwaver
ing total support of the Elders pro
gram and those of us that live out
side the Grand Ronde area and also
the concerns of the community.
Thank you for her support

To the Editor,
I am writing in response the letter
from Don Haller praising Ed Pears
all that was in the June, 1st issue of
Smoke Signals.
This letter seemed to suggest that
only one Council member gets things
done, when in fact there are nine.
I find it very distributing that
Smoke Signals would print a letter
in favor of one candidate, especially
around election time. I believe other
candidates have relatives who would
like to do the same. What is fair for
one should be for all.

To the Editor,
I am writing in response to the
glowing letter written by Don Haller
about Ed Pearsall.
I believe in supporting your favor
ite candidate, however I feel one per
son should not receive all the credit
for what nine council members have
accomplished by working together.
I feel that by using the Smoke Sig
nals as a campaign source is unfair
to 23 other candidates and highly
improper.
His letter opened the door for all
Tribal members who wish to promote
and campaign for their candidate. ,This
makes the Smoke Signals nothing
more than a campaign newsletter.
How did we allow this to happen?

ELECTION EDITORIAL POLICY
In order to ensure a balanced election campaign and fairness to all
candidates, the Smoke Signals 2000 Tribal Council Election Editorial
Policy for letters to the editor will be as follows:
Subject to existing editorial policies regarding libel, personal
attacks, and unsubstantiated facts,
1 . Letters in support of candidates will be published in regular
editions of Smoke Signals.
2. Statements from candidates will be published in a special
election edition of Smoke Signals, currently scheduled for
July 1,2000.
3. Letters to the editor from candidates will not be published
during the time period from nominations to the conclusion
of the Tribal Council Election.
4. Feature articles and spotlights involving candidates will be
suspended during the time period from nominations to the
conclusion of the Tribal Council Election.
This policy is intended to ensure an equal forum for all candidates.
SMOKE SIGNALS, a publication of the Confederated Tribes of
the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon, is published twice a month.
We have an Editorial Policy to encourage input from readers about
stories printed in SMOKE SIGNALS and other Tribal issues.
However, all letters must be received at the newspaper office
with author's signature, address, and phone number in order
to be considered for publication.
SMOKE SIGNALS reserves the right to edit any letter for clarity
and length, and to refuse publication of any letter or any part
of a letter that may contain libelous statements or personal attacks.
Not all letters are guaranteed publication upon submission.
Published letters do not necessarily reflect the opinions of
SMOKE SIGNALS, Tribal employees, or Tribal Council.
Dear Tribal members,
Now that nominations are over and
we have a multitude of candidates
competing for our Council positions,
we need to set some mandatory cri
teria for each and every one running.
We need to see resumes that include
background history, education, work
experience and what Tribal involve
ment they have had. If we are to be
responsible as a membership, we
need to have vital information on
each candidate in order to vote for
those who would best represent this
Tribe in a proud and positive light.
We are now a multi-million dollar
operation and we need to have a
Council that has the savvy to make
good business decisions that will carry
the Tribe through the new millen
nium and on into the future with the
continued success we now enjoy. It
is time to look at a new way of select
ing our Council members and we
need to start now.

Security access badges
We need your help. We have sev
eral security access badges checked
out and not returned. Some of them
have been checked out by people
who are not employed by the Tribe.
We need all of these returned as
soon as possible.
If you have one of these, please
return it. Failure to do so could re
sult in you not being able to check
out another one.
These badges are expensive, so we
need to use the same ones for as long
as we can. If you have lost the one
you checked out, please let us know.
Any badges not returned by June
25 will be deleted from the computer
program, rendering them useless.
I would also like to ask everyone to
please remember that we realize this
is a little bit of an inconvenience, but
remember it is necessary. Please treat
our central operator with courtesy. '
Thank you,
Michael J. Larsen
