How Coyote created Mother Earth
A story by Claudette M. Parazoo
Tillicum Elder 2923 Jawash lllaheee (Grand Ronde)
Coyote was lonesome. The moon and sun were far in the distance. Although he
could see them, he could not visit them and he was lonely and sad.
Poor Coyote. He thought about his situation of loneliness and ashed Tyee Saghallie
to help him.
"What is it you want?" ashed Tyee Saghallie.
Coyote said, "I am lonesome. I cannot visit the beautiful moon because it is far away.
I can feel the warmth of the sun but I want more."
Then Coyote sang, "Kai yai yai, Kai yai yai, help me to laugh and have many songs."
Tyee Saghallie said, "Coyote, you must be sure of what you want and what you are
ashing for."
"Oh yes," replied Coyote. "I am sure that I want to laugh and enjoy life. Please help
me."
"Alright, Coyote," said Tyee Saghallie. "Vou shall have your wish for creation but in
return I want something from you."
Coyote was very happy to hear that his wish would be granted. Coyote forgot to
ash Tyee Saghallie what he must give in return.
Coyote created the earth from his hide and used his saliva for water. His eyes made
colors of all his creation. Sometimes there was brown and blach, sometimes there was
blue as of the shy, sometimes there was green and yellow. Sometimes the colors would
mix and mahe new colors. He created the trees, flowers, and plant life. Coyote
created all the animals, insects, birds, and fish and unseen spirit life from all the hair on
his hide.
Next Coyote wanted to put people on the earth, so he created the Indians from the
toenails of his left paw, the blach people from the toenails of his right paw, the Asian
people from the toenails on left bach paw, and the white people from the toenails on
his bach right paw. Coyote was very proud of himself and immediately felt very happy
to have his creation and he was not lonely anymore. His tongue was the fire and his
teeth became the snow capped mountains. Coyote's blood was in the red sunset and
dawn of each day.
Coyote's heart became the love that is within each living thing and is the drum beat
we hear at the pow-wow. Coyote's legs are the drum stichs. Coyote's tail is the
laughter and joy of life...always held high. All of Coyote's insides became useful to
every living thing because we need to eat, sleep, run, play, and enjoy creation. Coyote's
ears help us to LISTEN. Coyote's tears became the rain, and the rainbow. When his
tears froze, there was snow. Coyote's nose and brain made hnowledge possible. The
clouds came from his breath and Coyote's breath became the wind.
Then Coyote's soul sang a song, "Kai yai yai, Kai yai, yai. Let it be so that all Tyee
Saghallie has given mahes me happy and I am not lonesome any more."
Coyote spohe to the Tyee Saghallie. "See what you have made possible for me to
create? I am very happy and thanb you for granting my wish."
Tyee Saghallie said, "Ves, you have made great and wonderful things. Coyote. But
remember, I said you must give me something in return? Vou did not wait to find out
what I would ash for in your eagerness to get what you wanted. Now, it is my turn."
Coyote was so happy, he said "Anything, Tyee Saghalli. What is it you want?"
Tyee Saghallie said, "All things you have created are not permanent. It was in the
creating that you found your happiness. But with happiness there is sadness. There is
always an opposite result when creation is made."
Now, Coyote was very sad. He had not ashed what Tyee Saghallie wanted. Now
Coyote's happiness would not last. Coyote's tail hung low and he cried, "Kai yai, yai,
yai, sadness and sorrow are in my heart. Please, Tyee Saghallie. I am sorry I did not
wait for you to tell me your wish. Please, Tyee Saghallie, I will be sad if you tahe all my
creation away."
Tyee Saghallie said, "I feel sorry for you Coyote. I believe you were sincere in your
wish to be happy, but I must have my wish, too. However, I will not destroy everything
you have created. I am happy to see what you have done in creating Mother Earth
and all that dwell therein. However, all the people, animals, insects, birds, and fish, and
life will die and then be renewed and recreated over time. The drum and songs will
renew the spirit of the people. In the death of each created life will be a campfire
which will bum in the heaven as stars in the night to accompany the sun and moon.
Culture will change but heritage and tradition will remain strong. The mountains will
wear away to sand and snow will melt into rivers. New mountains will be created from
within Mother Earth and the water will flood but bring other life. Change will always
happen but your creation will continue."
That is why our Coyote at the Spirit Mountain Casino is the spirit of change. The
Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde will renew ourselves and remember our heritage,
culture, and traditions. But we must always be careful of what we want and ash for.
We are survivors just as Coyote is. We hear his songs "Kai yai yai, Kai yai yai, looh at
my creation. The Tyee Saghallie has granted my wish. I am no longer lonely. Kai yai
yai. Vip, yip. Thanh you Tyee Saghallie."
