Smoke Signals
Tribal youth does it again!
By Pat and Melinda Henry
Summer Merrier placed 1st in her
weight division at the boy's State
Wrestling Championships in
LaGrande, Oregon on April 8-9.
She wrestles in the 1 1 and 12-year
old 65 pound division. She wrestled
Freestyle and Greco-Roman and
placed 1st in both events.
Summer placed 1st in 1998 in the
Greco-Roman 9 and 10-year old di
vision. This is a update for all who
donated in 1998 to send her to the
Northwest Regionals in Montana
where she placed 6th in Greco-Roman
style.
In 1999, Summer placed 3rd in
Folkstyle State Championships, 2nd
in Greco-Roman, 3rd in Freestyle
and qualified for the regionals but
we were unable to attend. She took
1st at the Northwest Classics at the
Memorial Coliseum against girls
from Oregon and Canada.
In 2000, she took 1st at the boy's
State Championships in both
Freestyle and Greco-Roman. She
was undefeated in her weight divi
sion on the Dayton Junior High
School boy's team, and 1st again at
the Classics against girls.
Summer was invited to be on the
Oregon's Women National Team at
the age of 11. We attended the Girls
Nationals in Michigan with the team
on March 25-27. No one was avail
able at her weight, 63 pounds at the
11-14 year old division. She chose not
to receive a 1st place National title,
she wanted to earn what she got. So,
she wrestled in the 86 pound division
which was 23 pounds above her
weight. She did excellent and she
placed 4th in the National Junior All
American Tournament at age 11.
' Summer qualified for the North
west Regionals in Poctello, Idaho for
earning a state championship in
Freestyle and Greco-Roman. We
would very much like for her to be
able to attend.

Summer Mercier
It's been very expensive for us to
get Summer to all of the tourna
ments, to Michigan and LaGrande.
The rest of the family has made great
sacrifices for Summer and they are
very proud and supportive of her.
We ask for donations once again
this year for Summer's trip to the
Northwest Regionals in Idaho. It's
the only way she will be able to go.
Any support is welcome. Summer
will also have donation jars available
in the local area stores.
Thank you again for all your sup
port in the past. Summer has worked
very hard and is the first girl in Or
egon to take 1st at State in both styles
against the boys. Keep it up, Girl!
