The 1950 Grand Ronde Indian Grade School championship basketball team re
cently held a 50-year reunion at the Tribe's Community Center.
Reunion organizer Percy "Gunney" Brandon brought each member of the team
together to remember the good times, the teamwork, and the hard work it took
to win the George Fox College Grade School Basketball Tournament. The tourna
ment was March 2-4, 1950 at Hester Memorial Gym and admission was 50 cents
a day for adults.
" The team started the tournament by defeating St. James 44-4 and then knocked
off a "tough" team from Valsetz 29-19. The win over Valsetz put the team in the
championship game against St. Paul.
Brandon said although he doesn't remember the final score, he said the team
won the game by one point.
"Looking back 50 years ago it is almost impossible to believe that we would ever
see each other again," said Brandon in the booklet he put together for each
member of the team. The booklet is filled with newspaper articles about the tour
nament and memories only these few people hold.
"The thought of getting us all together, after so many years, was at first a real
challenge," said Brandon. "We played basketball for the Grand Ronde Indians,
and we were, without a doubt the best."
The members of the team that year were Jauncey Perrizo, Miles Hadley, Frank
Tolman, Robert Schenck, Frank Keyton, Bill McDougall, Murch White, Larry Ander
son and Percy Brandon. Jackie Eden was the team manager and John Rose was
the coach.
