Employment opportunities for
Grand Ronde tribal members and
members of the community, and the
requirements necessary to keep
those jobs once they get them, is a
high priority for Tribal Employment
Coordinator Patsy Pullin.
According to Pullin, her programs
put people to work. Pullin adminis
ters the Native Employment Works
program; the Welfare-to-Work pro
gram; and a child care assistance pro
gram for working parents.
Pullin's program recently acquired
an employment kiosk from the State
of Oregon. The kiosk is an auto
mated job information resource now
located in the social services modu
lar near the west end of the commu
nity center.
Grand Ronde is the only Tribe in
Oregon with this type of kiosk said
Pullin.
"We got this kiosk because of our
good name with the state," said
Pullin. "We want people to know
this is open to all members of the
community, not just tribal members."
Pullin, who along with her hus
band Gene performed as country
music artists for more than 25 years
before settling back home in Oregon,
explained that her efforts to get jobs
for people and help them keep those
jobs is an essential service. She said
her program can help people with car
repair expenses or even in some cases
make a car payment so a client can
be assured of keeping their job. She
used Spirit Mountain Casino employ
ees as an example.
"Take someone who might be work
ing at Spirit Mountain, they might
need black shoes or black pants for
work," said Pullin. "We can help with
some of those expenses.
The maximum amount a client can
receive through Pullin's programs is
$1,000 annually.
"The upside of these programs is
they are there for people who really
need them," said Pullin.
Pullin, a tribal member and the
daughter of Tribal Chair Kathryn
Harrison, explained that she takes
her job seriously and is thankful to
be working for her Tribe.
"I am so impressed with our people.
They are so beautiful," said Pullin.
"They are beautiful and strong. Be
ing here in this job makes me really
proud to be a part of this. I feel like
