Tribal member earns recognition; sister takes East Coast tour
McMinnville's Grizzly Erica Empey does well at swimming, while sister Allison Empey embarks on an East Coast Trip.
APRIL 15, 2000
By Justin Phillips
Young tribal members Erica and
Allison Empey have been busy lately
Erica set a personal best while
swimming for McMinnville High and
Allison toured the nation's capital
with a group of McMinnville high
students.
Erica is on the Grizzly Swim Team
at McMinnville High School. In only
her second year on the swim team,
the hard working senior has given
inspiration to her teammates and oth
ers. Erica took fourth in the 200
freestyle in a lifetime best time. Keep
up the good work Erica!
Allison recently took a trip to the
East Coast with 24 other McMin
nville students. Allison visited such
sites as Monticello, the famous estate
of Thomas Jefferson, Washington
D.C., where the students were given
a VIP tour of the White House and

Allison was one of four students
chosen by the other students to rep
resent McMinnville and Oregon to
lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Un
known Soldiers. The wreath was
decorated with flowers and a ribbon
reading, "McMinnville High School."
Allison and her group also toured
George Washington's Mount Vernon
estate. In New York, the group saw
the Rockefeller Center, Chinatown
and Central Park. The last day of
their 13 day journey, they visited the
Statue of Liberty, where the students
marched up to the crown.
The students visited the Salem
Witch Museum and the Derby
Wharf on the last stop before their
plane left. The chaperones had a
brick engraved with "McMinnville,
OR, High School March 23, 2000."
To be eligible for this trip, students
obtained personal recommendations,
their transcripts were reviewed, and
they were selected by teachers and
advisors.
