Indian Youth Conference
On April 18-21, the All Tribes Foundation's I-WA-SIL Youth Program is
holding it's 25th Annual Northwest Indian Youth Conference at the Seattle
Center in Seattle, Washington. The conference theme is "Cultural and Edu
cational Challenges for the 21st Century."
The conference committee has worked diligently to ensure that this will be
the finest and largest Native American youth conference in North America.
For four exciting days, hundreds of AmericanAlaskan Native youth will come
together and participate in workshops and social activities that they will find
mentally, physically, and spiritually challenging.
The focus is on the skills needed to succeed in today's high tech world, but
at the same time keeping and strengthening their cultural integrity and
identity. Activities include a Scholastic Bowl, keynote speakers, talentfash
ion show, workshops, college career fair, arts and crafts displays, banquet
dinner, Miss NWIYC Contest, reception, National All-Indian Boys & Girls
Basketball Tournament and a tribal government symposium. In conjunc
tion with the conference is the I-WA-SIL Celebration Pow-wow, April 21-23.

Raffle tickets sells will help tribal
youth in competition
Ali Holsclaw is participating in the Miss Northwest Indian Youth Conference
Contest, held April 18-20 at the Seattle Center (see article above).
Part of the competition is raffle ticket sales.
The tickets are $2 each or three for $5. Prizes include.. ..$100 cash,
$50 cash, beaded belt buckle, hotel and two round trip airline tickets from
Seattle to Albuquerque, Pow-wow jackets, plus many more items.
Ali plans to sell raffle tickets at the April 2 General Council meeting.

Summer sponsorship applications
Summer Sponsorship is a program designed to support CTGR tribal youth
in kindergarten through 12th grade in participating in extra-curricular and
summer programs or activities. This program will pay a maximum of $200
toward registration costs only. Youth may apply to receive sponsorship one
time per year.
Students may apply by calling Lisa Leno at 1-800-422-0232 or (503) 879
2224, and requesting an application. Sponsorship is on a first come basis.
Allow two weeks to process a complete application.
Achievement & Recognition Awards
Achievement and Recognition is a non-competitive award to recognize
CTGR tribal youth who are enrolled in school, kindergarten through 12th
grades. The primary focus of the program is to honor students for academic,
community, and leadership accomplishments.
We encourage all students to apply, applications are due in the Tribal Edu
cation department or must be post marked by May 1. Applications must be
complete in order to receive full monetary award, there are no exceptions.

Studying in health care
IHS Scholarship deadline April 32000.
These are highly valued awards which do not require parental financial contribu
tion to the cost of the student's health career education program. Application pack
ets are available at the Grand Ronde Health Center or an Indian Health Service
Office. Scholarships are available in the following categories:
Health Professions Preparatory Scholarships
Eligibility; American Indian or Alaskan Native (enrolled tribal members or unenrolled
descendants of members); high school graduate or equivalent; capacity to complete a
health professions course of study; be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a compen
satory or pre-professional general education course or curriculum; intend to serve
Native people.
Preparatory Scholarships provide financial assistance to enroll in courses that
will prepare students for acceptance into health profession schools.
Pre-Nursing preparatory for entry into a BS degree program in Nursing.
Pre-Medical Technology preparatory for entry into a BS degree program in
Medical Technology.
Pre-Pharmacy preparatory for entry into a BS degree program in Pharmacy.
Pre-Dietetics preparatory for entry into a BS degree program in Dietetics.
Pre-Social Work preparatory for entry into a Master's degree program.
Pre-Physical Therapy preparatory for entry into a BS degree program in
Physical Therapy.
Health Professions Pre-graduate Scholarships
Provides financial support for American Indian and Alaskan Native students
(enrolled tribal members or unenrolled descendants of members) to enroll in courses
leading to a Bachelor's degree in specific pre-professional areas (Pre-Medicine and
Pre-Dentistry only). The applicant must be accepted by andor enrolled in a Bachelor's
degree program which, upon completion, will qualify himher for entry into an
accredited medical, osteopathic, or dental school. Priority for funding will be given
to college students in their junior and senior years.
Health Professions Scholarships
Provides financial assistance to American Indian and Alaskan Native students
(enrolled tribal members only) who are enrolled in Health Professions or Allied
Health Professions programs.
Payback Requirement: Health Professions Scholarships have contractual service
obligations and payback requirements upon acceptance of scholarship funds.

macy Dietetics (BS) Public Health Nutrition (Master's) Medical Technologist
(BS) Dentistry Health Education (Master's) Medical Social Work (Master's)

BENEFITS of IHS Scholarship Programs
Contingent on the availability of funds to be appropriated by Congress annually.
Stipend: $1,018 monthly for living expenses for the period of school year for prepara
tory and Pre-graduate Scholarship awardees, prorated for part-time students. Health
Professions Scholarship awardees will receive monthly stipends for 12 month period.
Tuition and Fees: IHS will make direct payment to the school for the full cost of tuition
and required fees of the school year, excluding summer school.
Other Reasonable Expenses: IHS will pay a lump sum amount to presumptively pay
the cost of travel, books, and other necessary expenses. IHS will not pay commuting or
any parking costs. Tutorial costs up to $400 may be paid directly to the student.
Free scholarships to law school
INROADS is implementing a new pro
gram for students of color planning to
attend law school in 2000 or 2001 called
the INROADS Law Internship Program.
QUALIFICATIONS:
College junior or seniors with at least
a 3.0 grade point average.
Planning to enter law school in 2000
or 2001.
African American, Asian American,
Latino or Native American students.
Demonstrated leadership skills.
The INROADS Law Internship Pro
gram is intended to encourage greater
technical excellence and academic prepa
ration for students of color in the field
of law. Students will have a paid in
ternship with a law firm during their
last summers of college and on into law
school. In addition to the paid intern
ship, the student will attend leadership
. training and law forums. The ultimate
goal is to place the student with the
firm. The intern would be obligated to
work for a minimum of two years with
the sponsoring firm upon graduation
from law school.

Tribal Trust Fund Scholarships
Application deadline is April 30, 2000.
Scholarships range in amount from $3,000 to $7,000. Tribal scholarships are
renewable as long as academic and attendance requirements are met. Scholar
ships are available in the following categories:
A Graduate, full-time and half-time
A Undergraduate, full-time and half-time
A Vocational, full-time and half-time
A Eula Petite, full-time education at Junior level.
