TRADITIONAL GRAND RONDEL
TWINING STYLLS
The series will spotlight the different materials, styles and designs traditionally
practiced in Grand Ronde. Nationally recognized basket expert Margaret Mathewson,
who presented a lecture in Grand Ronde last November, will conduct the classes.
Students will begin each course by using sticks and rope to learn the techniques.
Prepared natural materials will be slowly introduced, leading up to the preparation
and use of unprepared natural materials such as juncus, rush, tule, hazel and
willow. Gathering trips on the reservation will be scheduled, and outside guest
speakers will be invited to share their knowledge. An evening of basket identifica
tion for the entire community will be announced at a later date as will a conserva
tion workshop to learn how to protect family heirlooms and artifacts.
Every Wednesday evening from 6-9 p.m. at the Community Center

Grand Champion
Tribal member Kenneth Sequoia Lewis II, age nine, took the 1st place
medal in Kata (forms), the 1st place medal in sparring, and overall "Grand
Champion" at the Double Diamond National Championships held February
25th & 26th, 2000 at the Chinook Winds CasinoConvention center in Lin
coln City, Oregon.
. Kenneth trains at the
American Karate Acad
emy in Medford, Oregon.
His instructor, Shihan
Jerry Piddington, is a 9th
degree Black Belt and
former "World Champion"
in Kata, sparring and
weapons.
The location of the Na
tional Championships and
its proximity to tribal lands
gave Kenny an added in
tensity and desire to win.
The victory was a very
spiritual experience that
will never be forgotten.
Young Kenneth stopped
at the Grand Ronde
Tribal Cemetery and gave
a private performance of
the Grand Championship
Kata at the grave site of
his Grandmother Edna
"Bobb" Raya as a show of
respect for past ancestors.
Please note: The weapon in Kenneth's hand is his Grand Champion Award
and for display and photos only.
