A note on
Letters to the Editor:
In recent months, Smoke
Signals has received many
letters from tribal members
voicing opinions on current tribal
events and program services.
Though many of these letters
contain no personal attacks or
libelous statements about
specific people, we have been
unable to print some, because
the opinions expressed in the
letters were based on incorrect
facts.
Before submitting your letter,
find out all you can about the
issue you wish to comment on.
If you have a serious concern,
talk to Tribal Council or the
program managers involved with
the issue. Staff and Council are
here to answer your questions
and listen.
We welcome and encourage
letters from tribal members.
The purpose of Letters to the
Editor is to help make other
tribal members aware of specific
concerns within the organization.
In upcoming months, we will be
revising our Editorial Policy to
include more specific guidelines
regarding Letters to the Editor.

Dear Editor:
I am writing in response to J. Ken
Gregg's letter. I disagree with his
statement about keeping Tribal
Council from intervening with casino
employment matters. I believe the
Tribal Council should be involved in
the "day to day" operations of Spirit
Mountain Casino. The Council needs
to intervene when there are griev
ances that cannot be resolved. (We
need Council to oversee what is go
ing on.)
I believe there needs to be changes,
and hope the Council will make sure
everyone is treated fairly and equally
in casino employment.

Dear Editor:
As an Elder of the Tribe, I am ex
tremely grateful for all the unselfish
hours that Ken Gregg has put into
projects, attending meetings, giving
advise. He is an unselfish and sin

would like to thank him.

Thank you
Thanks you so much to all the car
ing and concerned persons who took
care of me before, during, and after
my trip to the hospital: the doctor and
his team; our priest, Father Ray; my
kids; and friends and relatives.
Thanks for the prayers and flowers,
and I cannot forget the ambulance
persons. Thank you all!

Special thank you
Hugs to all our beloved Elders! I will be forever grateful to you for the
wonderful recognition ceremony given to me at the Elders' Christmas dinner
on December 17. And what a pleasant and heartwarming surprise it was.
You all proved how well you can keep a secret. Many thanks again for the
gifts presented that night: the lovely beaded necklace made especially for
me, the fragrant bouquet of red roses, and most of all the gift from all of you
your honor and respect.
I also want to thank the Tribal Council secretary, Lauri Smith, who worked
with the Elders and made sure that I wasn't on travel status the week of this
surprise. Thanks also to my family for making sure I arrived at the party
that night. It's the first time they were all able to keep a secret!
I will ways treasure these memorable gifts.

Tribal member Mark Cook passes away
On December 8, 1999, tribal member Mark Cook died
in his home after a year and a half battle with cancer.
Mark was born to Howard and Ivanetta Cook (died
October 8, 1999) in McMinnville on December 27, 1949.
He was a twin. Mark graduated from Brookings Har
bor in 1969 and served in Vietnam in 1971. Mark
returned home to Brookings serving his country and
he worked for South Coast Lumber. In the late 1980s,
Mark moved home to Grand Ronde.
Mark was an avid hunter. He enjoyed many hunts
with Greg Leno and his nephew Tommy Misfeldt. He
was active on the Timber and Pow-Wow committees.
Mark became the Chairman of the first Grand Ronde
contest Pow-Wow in 1997. Mark was very proud of
the success of the Pow-wow and the committee. He
also enjoyed carrying the flags during Grand Entry at
Pow-Wow. Mark worked for the Tribe in the Wellness
Program as the van driver for the tribal Elders. He
loved all the Elders and the trips to visit other tribes.
Mark also worked for Mike Larsen in the tribal facili
ties department before transferring to the casino. Of
his job at the casino, Mark said "this is the best job I've
ever had." He loved his Spirit Mountain family, he
was proud of the casino.
Mark married Tammy Galligher in March of 1993.
Tammy is the Guest Services Manager at the casino.
Mark and Tammy, with their son, Anthony lived in
Willamina. Anthony attends the tribal pre-school Twah
Sunchako. Mark is survived by brothers Tom Misfeldt,
Lynn Cook, Pat Cook and Mike (twin) Cook; and one
sister, Pam Smith. Mark had two godchildren Ja
son Cook and Kiana Leno.
Tammy and Anthony would like to thank Mary Smith
of Hospice, Bonnie, Darlene, and Jill for the visits, sup
port and kindness showed to Mark' during his illness.
He loved each of you very much. Love to Renee (NeNe)
Gordan, Pat and Mike Cook for laughing, crying and
loving Marky in his final hours. Thanks to all the ca
sino and tribal staff, tribal members and friends for
the flowers, cards and visits during this difficult time.
Thank you to Father Ray for the wonderful service.
We appreciated the color guards and their salute to
Mark. Thank you to the Grand Ronde Veterans and
the N.W. Association of Native American Veterans.
To Eagle Beak drummers and those who joined the
drum to honor Mark, thanks for "Soldier Boy." It was
one of Mark's favorite songs. Joanne, the poem was
beautiful.
The family of Mark Cook would like to acknowledge
Val Grout, Ed Larsen, Reyn Leno, June Sell-
Sherer, Butch LaBonte, Bob Haller, Bob
Mercier and Ed Pearsall of the Tribal
Council for your presence at Mark's ser
vices and the beautiful flowers. To the
kitchen volunteers, Val's family, Tuff,
Jim, Nelda, Julie and Mike Little,
Claudia and your fry bread, every
one who brought a dish, and the
Royalty that assisted with the
serving. All of you brightened
our sad day. Thank you.
