Your old cell phone
could save a life
Most people say cell phones are
something they cant live without. That
phrase takes on a chilling urgency for
some women living under the shadow
of domestic violence.
Call to Protect, a national program,
refurbishes old, obsolete call phones
which are then distributed to women
living in domestic violence situations.
The cell phones are donated by both
businesses and individuals. Once re
furbished, the phones are pre-programmed
with numbers that could
save a woman's life when abuse esca
lates. The air time is free.
Call to Protect started in 1996 as a
joint venture between the National Coa
lition Against Domestic Violence,
Motorola, the Wireless Foundation and
telecommunications carriers. Phone
donations are tax deductible. The
program's website at http:
www.calltoprotect.org, offers informa
tion about the program and tells eli
gible organizations how they can apply
to receive phones.
