More than 80 Elders attended. The Elders also held a surprise rec ognition ceremony for Council Chair Kathryn Harrison, who was re cently named one of three Oregon Women of the Year by the Oregon Commission for Women. "Kathryn was both surprised and speechless," said Elders' Committee Chair Sharon Hanson. The Elders gave her a bouquet of red roses and a beaded necklace. "I have attended a lot of gather ings, but there is no greater honor than one given by your own people," said Harrison. "The Elders sure did a wonderful job planning this event. And they sure can keep a secret!" The dinner, which was all pre pared by Elders' Committee member Louise Medeiros included: prime rib, twice baked potatoes, rolls, salad, and gourmet desserts. The Elders danced to music by "Wat-2-C," a husband and wife vo cal and instrumental duet from Sa lem who sang a special song for Harrison, as well Christmas carols. "It was a wonderful holiday party," said Hanson. "Everyone got all dressed up and we were all in a festive mood." The party was planned by the El ders' Committee: Sharon Hanson, Ruby Bigoni, Dorothy Lawe, Beryle Contreras, Louise Medeiros, Arlene Beck, and Tom LaChance. On Saturday, December 11, at exactly 8:00 a.m., the tribal vans pulled up in front of Wal-Mart in Dal las. Twenty-five local children were anxiously waiting to be paired up with a deputy to go Christmas shopping. In the space of a very short hour the children completed their shopping and had the opportunity to visit with Santa and have their pictures taken. This is the fourth year of the program and it appears to be a continuing success. It is well received by the children, and the adults and deputies who volunteer their time. For the first time the program has received donations from a private group, in addition to Service Integration. This has added an element of surprise and delight to all who have made this program a wonderful success. Thanks to Katrina Herber and Tribal Council members Reyn Leno and Ed Larsen for driving the vans. On behalf of Sheriff Wolfe and the Grand Ronde deputies, "May you have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year."
