DECEMBER 17, 1999 11 Tribe to survey members about housing The Grand Ronde Tribal Housing Authority will be mailing out surveys on Jan. 3rd, 2000 to all tribal members. We encourage your participation in this survey, because it will be the basis for certain decisions about how to spend housing funds over the next five years. Each household that returns their survey by the deadline will be eligible for a cash prize! Watch for your survey in the mail in early January and remember that this is an impor tant opportunity for you to tell us about your housing needs! Senior Miss Grand Ronde will attend leadership conference Tribal member and Senior Miss Grand Ronde Kristy Deloe of Wil lamina has been selected to attend the the National Young Leaders Con ference from January 25 to January 30, 2000 in Washington D.C. The National Young Leaders Conference is a unique leadership develop ment program for high school students who have demonstrated leader ship potential and scholastic merit. Kristy will be among 350 outstand ing National Scholars from across the country to attend the conference. The theme of the National Young Leaders Conference is The Leaders of Tomorrow Meeting the Leaders of Today. Throughout the six-day conference, Kristy will interact with key leaders and news makers from the three branches of government, the media and the diplomatic corps. Highlights include welcoming remarks from the Floor of the United States House of Representatives and a panel discussion with prominent journalists at the National Press Club. Kristy will also meet with her senators and representative to discuss important issues facing Willamina and the nation. The National Young Leaders Conference is sponsored by the Congres sional Youth Leadership Council, a nonprofit, nonpartisan educational organization. Founded in 1985, the Council is committed to fostering and inspiring young people to achieve their full leadership potential. Over 425 members of the United States Congress join this commitment by serving on the Council's Honorary Congressional Board of Advisors. Each year, only 7,000 outstanding youth nationwide may participate in the 20 sessions of the National Young Leaders Conference. I t '! i , -v f i . Remember, this insurance will be offered to Elder spouses only. Education Committee vacancies The tribal Education Committee has three openings, and needs interested, caring tribal members to apply. Please call Lauri Smith, Tribal Council Sec retary, for an application: 1-800-422-0232, extension 2301. The committee will consider applications until the end of December, and new members will be selected in January. The committee has meetings once per month in the evenings. There is also some weekend work involved. The committee stays busy working with tribal members, students, and Education department staff. Meetings are open to the public, and members are more than welcome to sit in. Look for the 2000 meeting schedule in Smoke Signals. . , Invitation from Nanitch The staff at Nanitch Sahallie Youth Treatment Center in Keizer, Oregon welcome the presence of tribal Elders and crafters every night from 6-7:30 p.m. for Native American activities and visiting with the clients. They are also welcome to share lunch with the staff and clients every day except Wednesday, when the clients are off-site. Each Thanksgiving, they gather with their children, grand children and great grandchildren for a traditional get-together of din ner, cards and crafts. The highlight of this year's gathering occurred when Delores' youngest daughter, Rosemary Good Jameson, told the story of Nancy of The Dalles, "Grandma was an Indian," written by Harriet D. Munnick. The youngsters listening are some of Delores' 22 great-grandchildren. Nancy of The Dalles would have been these children's 5th great grandmother.
