DECEMBER 17, 1999 fcusinets Spotlight UTtlRE F TRI8AL MEMBER OWNER: Charlene Freeman BUSINESS TYPE AND SERVICES: Future Images full-service men and women' salon. HOW LONG IN BUSINESS?: Five years in this current business located in Dallas. OTHER JOBS AND BUSINESS EXPERIENCE: Owned C Street Hair Compmy in Independence for five years. LOCATION: 160 Orchard Drive in Dallas by Safeway. REASON FOR STARTING A BUSINESS: Freeman said her husband became disabled and she was working at a lumber mill pulling green chain and decided that might not be the job for her. "I decided I didn't want to be doing that when I was 40 years old" said Freeman of working in the mill. "So, that is what made me decide to go to school The Tribe started helping me about half way through school and it was a lifesaver." EDUCATION: Phagan's Beauty School in Salem. REWARDS OF OWNING A BUSINESS: "You can pick, and choose your hours and accommodate your family," said Freeman. Freeman said when she was operating her first beauty shop on her own, she worked long hours and had to cut a lot of hair before turning a profit. She. said the arrangement she has now allows her time to leave and take care of family priorities without losing business because she's not there. "You axe rewarded for however much you are motivated," said Freeman, "if you put in the time, you can make as much money as you are willing to put in the effort. That's what I needed." WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU LIKE FOLKS TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS? "We have seven stations for people and we have three tanning beds" said Freeman. She has seven partners who all rent their own stations and purchase their own supplies. She said the group method of business ownership has been good to her. "This is much easier, we kind of work cooperatively," said Freeman of her partners. "Everybody pays their rent and the owner pays the overhead so it works out great. Everybody loves what we do and it is a relaxed, clean atmosphere. We are more like family in here than co-workers." And all the partners always keep at least one stylist's schedule open so they can accommodate walk-ins without a long wait. Freeman said she is encouraged by the amount of tribal members who frequent her salon, and her salon offers reasonable prices and a flexible schedule for taking appointments. She said the stylists will stay late or come early to fit someone's schedule. The salon is open seven days a week. "In the back we have an area for little children and a play area with some seating" said Freeman. "There is a TV and VCR for the kids to watch movies and cartoons while waiting for mom or dad."
