After years of hard work and planning, Polk County is excited to announce the
beginning of expanded transportation services.
The Chemeketa Area Regional Transportation Service (CARTS) expanded services
to Central Polk County area residents on October 18. The new service began operating
transportation services connecting the cities of Dallas, Monmouth, Independence and
Salem. Hopefully the future will include Grand Ronde.
"This type of service (scheduled bus service) has been needed for a long time, and
will improve the quality of lives of many Polk County residents by connecting them to
jobs, medical facilities and social services," said Marsha Clark, the Polk County Human
Services Director.
Routes operate Monday through Friday, and depart regularly from the Polk County
Courthouse. Presently, this service is being provided by Wheels Community Transpor
tation, through a contract with the Salem Area Mass Transit District. The service is
available to any person who wishes to ride on the system.

Now is the time to start thinking about joining the Grand Ronde
Royalty Court! Participating in the Royalty Court is an excellent
chance for young tribal women to represent the Tribe in a positive
way. It does require commitment and time, but it is a tremendous
honor. There will be dance, protocol, craft and speaking classes that
will help prepare you to be on Royalty.
Any young lady who would like to participate in Royalty to gain
experience may as a Princess, and not compete this year for a
Queen position. We encourage any interested young lady who is a
tribal member and between the ages of 5 and 21 to join us.

Grand Ronde Royalty Court guidelines:
Participants must be enrolled members of the Grand Ronde Tribe, drug
and alcohol-free, childless, and never married.
If school age, must be attending school (private or public) full-time.
The age categories are: Miss Tiny Tot 5-7; Jr. Miss 8-12;
Sr. Miss 13-17; and Miss Grand Ronde 18-21.
The girls must be within these ages by January 15, 2000.
Participants must have their own regalia. It is not the responsibility of the
Royalty Board, Tribal Council, or any other tribal program to provide this.
Members of the Royalty Court are not paid a salary or wage. However, the
chosen queens will receive stipends and a budget for travel expenses for
attending required events.
The Royalty Court and their families must show good judgement by not
participating in any activity that could bring adverse publicity to themselves or
the Tribe.
Participants must have a parent or sponsor who is willing to assist them in
attending required events, and help with activities that Royalty is involved
with. All members of Royalty must comply with the guidelines and the Royalty
agreement.
The deadline for submitting an application is February 29, 2000.
