A-new face ion Education

The Education department an
nounced the hiring of Deena
Rosenda LaRue as the department's
new Continuing and Distance Edu
cation Specialist.
LaRue will be the Education
department's contact person for the
Short Term Training Program.
LaRue, of the Tlingit's Eagle
Killerwhale clan in Kake, Alaska,
moved to Oregon to pursue her
Master's degree in Business Admin
istration. LaRue said she is looking forward
to working with Grand Ronde tribal
members through the Education de
partment. "My experience working with Na
tive students has strengthened my
perception and understanding that
they need mentors and Native lead
ers to guide them on their path,
which at times, can be hard and un
certain," said LaRue. "My past em
ployment has provided me with ex
perience working with American In
dian and Alaskan Native families,
individuals and students in assisting
them obtain their goals in employ
ment, education and training oppor
tunities." LaRue said she has worked as an
employment and intake specialist in
Alaska and has spent time teaching
in the Head Start Program. She has
spent time working with families by
helping present information on edu
cational options.
"I am fortunate to have a diverse
work experience that tied together
one job to another," said LaRue of
her past experience. "I was able to
provide my knowledge of
services from one job to uti
lize it on another job to as
sist clients, students and
families. I enjoy working
with my American Indian
and Alaskan Native people
and I will do all that I can
to assist them in achieving
their goals to become self
sufficient." LaRue said she is happy
to be working in the community and
that she is very impressed with
Grand Ronde.
"I'm so happy Deena is on board,"
said Education Director Marion Mer
rier. Mercier said LaRue was a "good
fit for the community" and is pleased
with her experience working with
Indian programs.

Starting a Successful Business
WHAT: A ten-week series of classes designed to guide participants through
the business plan writing process. The end result is a complete busi
ness plan that can be taken to lenders for loan consideration!
WHERE: Classes will be held at the Tribe's Small Business Development
Center located at 28840 Salmon River Highway in Grand Ronde.
WHEN: The classes will be held every Tuesday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
beginning February 15, then every Tuesday thereafter for a total of
10 weeks. The dates are as follows: February 15, 22, 29; March 7, 14,
21, 28; and April 4, 11, 18, 25.

Men's Health Issues

Ever wonder why men don't stay in the race as long as their female counter
parts? It may be because they don't get as many tune-ups as they should. Join
us for an informative presentation about common health issues facing men to
day. Learn how preventive maintenance, improved health habits, and a positive
outlook can fine-tune your health for the long run.
Topics include: High blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease,
and prostate disease. Presenters scheduled are: Dr. James Molloy III; Megan
Buckholz, FNP; and Kathy Faber, FNP.
Diabetes Support Group
Tues., Dec. 21 11:00 a.m. to noon
Grand Ronde Health & Wellness Center Chasta Room
This meeting is for anyone that has diabetes or is interested in diabetes pre
vention. The group meets every third Tuesday of the month, with a different
health topic pertaining to diabetes management.
Discussion topics include: Holiday Food Planning and High Blood Pressure.
A light dinner will be prepared for the participants and recipes will be provided.
There will also be other recipes available to help in holiday food preparation.
Education Committee vacancies
The tribal Education Committee has three openings, and needs interested,
caring tribal members to apply. Please call Lauri Smith, Tribal Council Sec
retary, for an application: 1-800-422-0232, extension 2301. The committee
will consider applications until the end of December, and new members will
be selected in January.
The committee has meetings once per month in the evenings. There is also
some weekend work involved. The committee stays busy working with tribal
members, students, and Education department staff. Meetings are open to
the public, and members are more than welcome to sit in. Beginning in
2000, Darlene Aaron, Chairperson, will run the meeting schedule in Smoke
Signals.
