Broaden your skills by learning a foreign language The Education department would like to invite everyone interested in learning Spanish or French, or students who are having difficulty learn ing in the classroom, to take advantage of the fantastic self-paced Rosette Stone software soon to be installed in Education's new computer lab. By incorporating multisensory learning like we all used as babies to learn English, it makes learning easy and fun, and enables the learner to speak and read the language from beginning levels to college fluency. Bilingual people have an advantage in qualifying for a broader spec trum of jobs, with better pay and benefits. Many employers in the service-oriented industries are looking for staff who are bilingual. Urgent news for GED students It is very important for everyone who began GED tests in 1995, but have not completed all require ments for certification, to be aware that they must do so before Decem ber 31, 1999 or they will have to retake all tests and pay additional testing fees. - - The Tribal Adult Education de partment, therefore, would like to urge everyone to share this infor mation with anyone they think might be in this situation, particu larly those who don't read Smoke Signals regularly. There is enough time before the deadline for stu dents to prepare if they begin now, particularly since the GED office , is now open five and a half hours more each week. New classes and cancellations D PSITS FIRST AMERICAN SERIES is up and running and being held in the classroom in the Tribe's Governance Center. This class is set up so that students may enroll in the individual discussion class of their choice or they may enroll in a series of four discussion classes to earn one college credit. Four series of four discussion classes will be offered. Classes may be taken for college credit or for non-credit. Tribal members must apply to the Short Term Training program in order to have tuition paid. D The Education department will not offer the GRAND RONDE CUL TURE & HERITAGE CLASS Fall Term 1999 due to low enrollment. There is a possibility that the class will be offered Winter Term 2000. D The Education department will offer a one credit NATIVE AMERI CAN FILM SERIES CLASS in December if enough people sign up. The film class will be held on December 3 from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. and on December 4 from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Class content includes: viewing old and contemporary Native American films, lecture and dis cussion, and exercises relating to identity issues and stereotyping and analyzing video content. This person will also adminis ter the Short Term Training program. We would appreciate it if all Short Term Training program students would submit their most recent grade reports if they have not done so. Natural Resources scholarships available The Intertribal Timber Council is pleased to invite all interested Native AmericanAlaskan students to apply to the Truman D. Picard Scholar ship Program. The scholarship was established to support students pur suing a higher education in Natural Resources. Fourteen scholarships will be awarded to graduating seniors (4 at $1,200 each) and to currently enrolled students (10 at $1,800 each). Interested students must provide a completed application packet by March 3, 2000. Due to the building renovation, there will be more space allowed for those vendors who wish to bring display boards, etc. Anyone interested in participating, please call now: (503) 879-2476 November 6 in Salem STAGE presents a celebration of Native American Music STAGE at The Historic Elsinore Theatre presents The Silver Feather Festi val: A Celebration of Native American Music on Saturday, November 6 at 7 p.m. The national tour opens in Salem its only stop in the west. The Silver Feather Festival is a celebration of Native American women in music, touring during Native Heritage Month. The concert features some of the most prominent recording artists in the genre; showcasing the amazing diversity within this group. Doors open at 6 p.m. for a social hour. November 12-13 Willamina Coastal Hills Art Tour - The 8th Annual Coastal Hills Art Tour will be held November 12 and 13 in Willamina. Local artists and crafters will be showing their work in down town store fronts as well as in individual galleries. Visitors will have a chance to tour the historic Dr. Andrew Kershaw House, where you can meet local published authors and linger to sip tea and savor fine pastries and desserts.
