Smoke Signals Drum and dancers educate ZooKeepers By Amanda Siestreem On September 15, Grand Ronde's Eagle Beak Drum and Dancers per formed for a crowd of 300 for the In ternational ZooKeepers Association Convention at the Portland Zoo. Amidst the shimmering new facili ties, which has been partially funded by donations from the Spirit Moun tain Community Fund, the perform ers shined. Eagle Beak, having performed for a crowd of 40,000 people at the Nike World Masters Games, was unruffled by the full banquet room. Zoo coordi nator Anne Michel, arranged for the drum group to perform and expressed her gratitude with free backstage passes and complimentary salmon dinners, and announced the group as "the real heart of the Northwest." Monika Robideau, women's tradi tional dancer and Miss Lakota Oyateki 1999, said, "I'm here repre senting the Oregon State Peniten tiary, all of them. I bring your good wishes back to them." Rose Starr, mother of Shane and Dustin Harmon of Eagle Beak, said "We travel together, it's a family thing. It makes us feel good to dance for our Elders who can't dance. We are proud to be who we are." Her daughter, Leah, was the first exhibition dancer. Leah's fancy dance and crow hop sent the crowd into wild applause. Before each dance, Bobby Mercier stood up from the drum and spoke to the crowd, informing them of the significance of the dance within the tradition. After Leah, Isaac Trimble and Manuel Starr grass danced. Bobby Mercier said, "watch their steps and their moves. Grass dancers came out to stomp all the grass down to prepare for ceremonies." Next Manuel Starr danced the Little Kyoni Mercier beats on drum. Chicken Dance "with a hop step and a little bit of a strut to it." After their dancing, Bobby Mercier stood up and spoke to the silent room, saying, "We come here to educate, a lot of people still think we all live in tipis." The room erupted in laughter and Mercier continued, "We're sure happy to be with you here tonight. There are a lot of songs for each dance, but we just sing the ones we know." Questions poured from the crowd and Bobby Mercier answered easily. The crowd asked where is Grand Ronde? And Bobby replied and in vited everyone out to the Casino, giv ing precise directions. Mercier and his companions answered questions until the crowd was quieted and then Mercier said, "Thank all you guys for inviting us out here. We say thank you." As the crowd stood and broke apart, one woman came up to Eagle Beak. Her name was Betty Thomas and she was a zookeeper and Choctaw Indian from Tulsa. With a glint of delight in her eye, she said, "I thought that was so great because J'm an Indian! Oh yes, it got me go ing. I don't ever miss a pow-wow."
