Employment services available to members through CRD
Native Employment Works program (N.E.W.)
This program targets low-income tribal members on a case by case basis:
teen parents, TANF recipients, general assistance clients, unemployed or
under-employed members. This program also includes; career development,
job counseling, job search, job development, job placement, job preparation
activities including resume writing, interviewing skills, etc. Assistance avail
able may include work clothes or tools, car repair or payment, car or driver
licencing, car insurance, bus pass, mileage reimbursement, some rent or de
posits, some utilities, union dues, or special licencing. There are limits to the
amounts offered in all categories. Child-care assistance is also available.
The N.E.W. program is available to tribal members living in the six county
area, Polk, Yamhill, Tillamook, Washington, Marion, and Multnomah. To
be eligible, clients must possess a high school diploma or GED, or able to
obtain a GED or diploma within six months. Clients must actively search for
work and be able to work if placed.
Welfare-to-work program
In July of 1997, legislature, passed limiting recipients to 60 months of
Welfare Initiative. The objective: to put welfare recipients to work by provid
ing agencies with tools and resources to facilitate recruiting and hiring.
The program is for long-term welfare recipients (30 months) who also have
barriers to employment such as low math or reading skills, poor work history,
or substance abuse history. Eligibility will be determined through client
assessment. Two innovations of this program are the partially subsidized
employment through an O.J.T. contract and the creation of new positions
with complete wage subsidy. However, employers must meet criteria to be
eligible. Clients of this program may be eligible for a variety of assistance,
similar to the N.E.W. program, also a case by case basis. j
