Spirit Mountain Development Corporation.
What does that mean? SMDC is the economic
development arm of the Tribe. It was organized by
Tribal Council several years before Spirit Moun
tain Casino opened, which was one of its first
projects. The casino is doing well. But Tribal
Council knew that in order for the Tribe to become
self-sufficient, and continually provide services and
benefits to members, the Tribe would have to pur
sue all types of business ventures and economic
opportunities. Almost all of the Tribe's ventures
fall under the parentage of SMDC.
Tribal Council also established Spirit Mountain
Board of Directors, a group of tribal members and
consultants who weigh the pros and cons of busi
ness opportunities that have been proposed to the
Tribe, and make decisions about which ventures
to pursue.
Bruce Thomas, president of SMDC said, "We
want to pursue business where we have a com
petitive advantage. We want to avoid head-to-head
competition in an established market."
Thomas said that the Tribe needs diverse income
sources, and that Tribal Council and the Board con
sider all opportunities carefully. The partnerships
the Tribe has with real estate developers and other
companies are the result of extensive research and
the successful reputation of these groups.
Although the casino is the largest, and by far
the most profitable business the Tribe owns, other
opportunities have been presented over the last
few years. Many of those ventures have been fea
tured in Smoke Signals, but the businesses are
changing and growing all the time. We know that it
can be difficult to keep up with these projects, so
here is an update and diagram of the Tribe's busi
ness ventures, and how they operate.
